With over 11 years of experience teaching English, I bring both expertise and a deep passion for helping students grow as confident, skilled writers. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English from Virginia Tech and a Master’s in Curriculum & Instruction from the College of William & Mary, along with an Educational Leadership endorsement. My teaching philosophy is rooted in creating a supportive and engaging environment where every student feels empowered to succeed. Whether you're working on a persuasive essay, analytical writing, creative storytelling, or preparing for standardized tests, I have successfully guided writers across all genres to achieve their goals. As a tutor, I am highly organized, detail-oriented, and patient. My approach ensures that each lesson is tailored to your unique needs, providing the structure and feedback necessary to master both foundational and advanced writing skills. As an English tutor, my focus is on creating a personalized and supportive learning environment where students feel confident to express their ideas and improve their skills.
My approach includes:
-Individualized Lessons: Tailored to each student’s unique strengths, challenges, and goals.
-Ongoing Feedback: I provide constructive, detailed feedback throughout the learning process to help students refine their writing and build confidence.
-Pacing for Mastery: Students progress at their own pace, ensuring they fully grasp each concept before moving forward.
-Encouraging Growth: I foster a positive, supportive atmosphere that motivates students to take risks, think critically, and enjoy the process of writing.
My lessons are engaging, structured, and designed to keep students actively involved:
1. Check-in: A quick discussion to set the stage for the lesson.
2. Focused Instruction: Introduction of a specific essay-writing skill, such as crafting a thesis, integrating evidence, or mastering transitions.
3. Guided Practice: We work through an example together, breaking down the steps and discussing strategies.
4. Independent Practice: Students apply the skill through a writing exercise, such as drafting a paragraph or outlining an essay.
5. Feedback and Revision: I provide targeted feedback, and students revise their work to strengthen their understanding.
6. Wrap-Up and Reflection: Review key takeaways and discuss how the day’s skill fits into the broader essay-writing process and what the next lesson will cover.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor?
Extensive Experience: I’ve successfully prepared middle and high school students for standardized tests, including AP Language & Composition and AP Literature. I know what it takes to excel on essays and timed writing tasks.
Passion for Writing: My enthusiasm for writing is contagious. I love helping students find their voice and turn their ideas into compelling essays.
Holistic Approach: Beyond teaching writing techniques, I emphasize critical thinking, organization, and time management—skills that benefit students in all academic areas.
