About Michelle

I began teaching to share my passion of film and media, to college students in North West London. My past students have successfully progressed to university, some with scholarships due to their high grades. I have tutored 1:1 as well as teaching classes of 20+. I have taught photography to college students and adults, also Art & Design, art history, plus journalism at sixth form. I've also taught English to foreign students. I have exhibited both photography and film, at film festivals such as the Raindance Film Festival in London and the Bradford Film Festival. I am a keen photographer too and specialise in live music photography. I have a BA Hons in Mixed Media Arts 2:1, an MA in Design & Media Arts (Both at the University of Westminster, London) and a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education (at Greenwich University, London). I'm DBS checked too. I've been practising Yoga for 22 years and I am a qualified BSY certified yoga teacher. I am also a proud parent to three - two adult sons and one teenage daughter, so I know how to relate well to various age groups.

About the lesson

Individual tailored lessons according to the course you are taking. Regular feedback on assignments, help with analysis of film/media texts, exam preparation and how to implement appropriate subject terminology to enhance your grades. Key media concepts can be taught to deepen your knowledge successfully; I will help you improve by preparing resources, making notes on your coursework to advise improvements to your grades as well as having a thorough knowledge of the history of film. I also encourage you to use what resources your sixth form/college uses too and can help with your understanding of those, as you will be familiar with these taught in your main classes. I also have a wealth of resources in all my subject areas to share with you, if you prefer.

Helen is a very bright and intelligent student who already has a good working knowledge of film studies and the necessary subject terminology to do well. She needs to use more screenshots in her analysis to aim higher with grades. Look forward to see her progress!

Toulla worked well with the activity today, using Pic flow to create a photo gallery, for her deadline tomorrow. This platform was very easy to use and enabled Toulla to upload all her images and add text in the form of a summary of her working processes. Then it created a link to enable her to share the photo gallery with her teacher/exam board, for assessment purposes. It served as a useful tool specifically saving Toulla lots of time and effort. We will definitely use this again in future, to create mood boards, storyboards and other galleries.

We've just finished the 1st lesson and began looking at representation, using the music video of Queen - I want to break free.

We discussed some ideas on stereotypes and the meanings via Freddie Mercury's visual representation. We also began looking at theorists but need to go into this in more detail next lesson.

I've asked Ellie to look over the notes I've made and to have a go at doing one of the exam questions as practice.

I've also asked her to decide what she wants to discuss specifically next lesson, some aspect or theorist in particular, that she struggles with.

Carla is very aware of what she needs to do in terms of improving her grade. She is very attentive during the lesson and explains where she needs additional help with her studies. I have given her advice on what to do next with reference to her idea generation and how to plan her pre-production according to the BTEC criteria. We will discuss this further in the next lesson, with examples.
