About Jack

I'm Jack Venn, founder of my own independent studio called 1408 Game studios based in Chatham, Kent, with over 5 years of experience working within game design and creative development. I hold a Master of Arts (MA). I have a strong passion for helping and supporting others develop their skills, confidence, and understanding of the games industry.

My experience combines both academic knowledge and real-world industry practice, providing insight into how game development works professionally as well as creatively. I’ve worked across different areas of game design, development, creative workflows, and project planning, while also building and managing my own studio and projects.

I enjoy helping individuals grow their portfolios, discover their strengths, improve their creative thinking, and better prepare themselves for careers within the games industry. Whether you are currently studying at university, recently graduated, or looking to start your own indie studio, I aim to provide practical guidance, honest feedback, and supportive mentorship tailored to your goals.

My lessons are designed for adults aged 18+ who are serious about improving their skills and gaining a better understanding of the industry in a relaxed, creative, and professional environment.

My teaching approach is all about helping students grow their confidence, improve their creative skills, and better understand how the games industry really works. I try to keep lessons relaxed, supportive, and practical, while still giving honest feedback and industry insight that can genuinely help students move forward in their careers.

Every lesson is tailored to the individual depending on their goals, experience level, and what they want to improve. Some students may want help building a stronger portfolio, others may want guidance with game design theory, GDDs (Games Design Documents), creative workflows, or preparing themselves for jobs in the industry. I also support aspiring indie developers who are interested in starting their own studio or developing personal projects.

My lessons combine both creative and professional development, including:

Games design theory and methodology
Portfolio feedback and improvement
Industry techniques and workflows
Game ideas, systems, and problem solving
Understanding your strengths and specialisation
Career advice and industry preparation
Confidence building and creative support
Guidance for indie game development and studio creation

I have over 5 years of experience working within the games industry and currently run my own independent games studio based in Chatham, Kent. Alongside this, I also hold a Master of Arts (MA), which helps me bring together both academic knowledge and real-world industry experience.

Lessons are available online or in-studio depending on preference and location. Most sessions usually last between 1–2 hours depending on the topic and depth of the lesson.

My tutoring is aimed at adults aged 18+, including:

University students studying games design, game art, or related subjects
Recent graduates trying to break into the industry
Aspiring indie developers and studio founders
Anyone looking to improve their portfolio, skills, confidence, or career opportunities within games

Above all, I want students to leave lessons feeling more confident, more motivated, and with a clearer understanding of both their own potential and the games industry itself.

With my pricing I try and keep affordable while still reflecting the experience, support, and industry knowledge I bring into each lesson. With over 5 years of experience working in the games industry, alongside running my own independent games studio, as well as holding a Master of Arts (MA), my lessons are designed to give students practical, real-world insight into game development and the creative industry.

The standard rate is £24 per hour, with lesson packs available for students who want ongoing support and long-term development. Every lesson is personalised depending on what the student wants to focus on, whether that’s improving a portfolio, learning games design theory, working on GDDs (Games Design Documents), preparing for the industry, or getting support with indie game projects and studio ideas.

The price also covers the time spent outside of lessons, including:

Lesson planning and preparation
Portfolio reviews and feedback
Industry guidance and mentoring
Creative support and career advice
Teaching materials and personalised resources where needed

I also offer a free 1-hour introductory lesson so students can talk through their goals, ask questions, and get a feel for how the lessons work before committing.

Online lessons are available with no extra webcam fee, making sessions flexible and accessible. In-person lessons may include an additional travel fee depending on location and travel time.

My main goal is to make lessons genuinely useful, supportive, and valuable for students who are serious about improving their skills, building confidence, and preparing for a future within the games industry.
