About John
I have worked as a head of science for a number of years and am now working as an Assistant Principal in a secondary school in London in charge of whole-school teaching and learning. I still teach GCSE science, both Combined and Separate science and A level Biology and have a solid knowledge of all the exam specifications. I also have experience as a private tutor both online and face to face.
My responsibility as an Assistant Principal and the training I have undergone has deepened my understanding of how students learn. As a result, I feel I am skilled in adapting my teaching to ensure that all learners I work with make the best possible progress, regardless of their needs. Furthermore, I form strong working relationships with my students and tutees and believe that having a atmosphere of positivity brings out the best in young people. Earlier in my career, students at my school voted me the most motivational teacher!
Before entering the teaching profession, I worked as a pharmacist for 7 years. I therefore have a strong knowledge of what looks like in the 'real world'.

I find helping students learn and watching them make great progress incredibly rewarding!
I form strong working relationships with my students and adapt my lessons to best help them learn. I have a strong knowledge of exam technique and believe that in every session, my students will make significant progress.
My expectations will be high but my manner is relaxed and reassuring to give my students confidence in what they are doing.
Each session will start with me assessing what the student or students currently know on a topic. This enables me to pitch the rest of the lesson at an appropriate level so that students make progress at a rate that is challenging but not stressful. I will check for understanding very regularly throughout each session to ensure the pace is right. The tasks I give to students to help them acquire knowledge will depend on how they best learn.
We will also spend time applying knowledge learnt to exam questions that are specific to the exam board the student is using. I will give advice on how to 'unpick' exam questions so that students fully understand what is being asked of them.
