About Ailin

Hello, my name is Ailin, and I am a qualified Mandarin teacher with six years of experience teaching across independent, grammar, and state schools throughout the UK. I have taught a range of educational stages, including Key Stages 2 through 5, covering GCSE, A-Level, and HSK curriculums. Additionally, I have extensive experience in online teaching, having worked with students from over 20 countries, primarily focusing on adult learners.

I hold a BA in Chinese Language and Literature and an MA in Comparative Literature and World Literature, which gives me a deep and nuanced understanding of the Mandarin language and its cultural contexts. I have obtained Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from University College London. Previously I got teaching training at Peking University and Beijing Language and Culture University.

About the lesson

In my Mandarin lessons, I offer two main types of courses. For teenagers aged 11-18, I provide comprehensive preparation for GCSE, A-Level, and HSK exams, focusing on enhancing the four core language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. For adults, I offer practical conversational lessons tailored to daily interactions and travel tips in China, as well as preparation for HSK exams, with self-learning resources available post-lesson. I also customise courses based on individual needs, such as advanced pronunciation coaching for public speaking, business Mandarin for entrepreneurs, or literature lessons for those interested in Chinese classics.

My teaching style is supportive, encouraging, and innovative. I believe confidence is crucial in language learning, and I ensure my students leave each lesson with a sense of achievement by setting clear and attainable learning objectives. I combine traditional teaching methods with innovative techniques to make learning Mandarin enjoyable and engaging. This includes using music, short films, cultural artefacts, and podcasts to bring the language to life. Additionally, I introduce students to the latest Artificial Intelligence apps for learning Mandarin, such as creating Mandarin lyrics for songs or designing outfits and describing them in Mandarin. We track and record learning progress in every tutor session to ensure continuous improvement.
