About Alex

I'm a 20-year-old undergraduate student at UMKC, studying applied mathematics. I have experience tutoring at elementary, high school, and introductory college levels. I also worked in the tutoring center at Weber State University, helping non-traditional students get back into the flow of being a student as well as with their math homework.

I'm very passionate about math; the way mathematical concepts explain the world around us is so cool to me. I hope to share that excitement that math inspires in me with all my students. When I'm not studying I love spending time outdoors, hiking, river rafting, camping, anything. I also spend a lot of time taking care of my six snakes and spending time with them.

About the lesson

As a tutor is meant to supplement another teacher, I expect my tutees to bring homework or notes from their math lessons and to prepare questions ahead of time. This helps me understand and reinforce what the teacher has already explained, and also help us all get the most out of each tutoring session.

Other than that, my approach to tutoring is very adaptable. Every student learns a little differently and has a slightly different grasp on the same material, so throughout the course of any given lesson I make sure to amend the teaching strategies I use, so my student is best able to understand and absorb the information. I am also able to quickly judge a student's prior knowledge of the material in order to keep lessons engaging and informative no matter what their teacher has or hasn’t covered in class.
