About JOHN
I am a dedicated Mathematics Teacher and Instructional Coach with over 16 years of experience in the New York City public school system. My career is defined by a commitment to facilitating the individual growth of students and supporting educational excellence in the Bronx. Throughout my tenure as a Senior Math Teacher and Grade Level Leader, I have specialized in creating academic rigor while maintaining a supportive, collaborative learning environment.
My legitimacy is rooted in a strong academic and professional foundation:
Master's Degree in Multicultural Education: I hold an advanced degree from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, which informs my ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds.
Instructional Leadership: I have served as a Lead Math Teacher and Math Coach, where I modeled effective instructional practices and supported fellow educators in their professional growth.
Curriculum Development: I have extensive experience developing Social Emotional and Culturally Responsive materials aligned with Common Core and Next Generation standards.
Proven Results: I have organized and facilitated testing procedures for all state and citywide exams, ensuring students are prepared for high-stakes assessments.
Beyond the classroom, my professionalism and leadership extend to the athletic field. As an inductee into the Adelphi University Basketball Hall of Fame and a longtime coach for district-wide tournaments, I bring a unique perspective on mentorship and motivation. I am not just a tutor; I am a mentor who uses conflict resolution and individual counseling to help students overcome the "anxiety of mathematics" and realize their full potential. I am also a proud member of the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

My teaching philosophy is centered on relieving mathematics anxiety by creating a supportive environment where students feel safe to explore complex concepts. I believe every student possesses prior knowledge that can be unlocked and applied to master new, rigorous academic tasks.
I utilize a student-centered and culturally responsive approach to ensure that math feels relevant and accessible. My techniques include:
- Scaffolded Instruction: I break down "Next Generation" aligned curriculum into manageable steps to prevent overwhelm.
- Modeling and Co-exploration: Drawing from my experience as an instructional coach, I model effective strategies and then work alongside the student to practice them.
-Data-Driven Strategies: I use structured mathematical strategies to identify specific learning gaps and address them directly.
A Typical Lesson Plan:
1. Mindset Check & Prior Knowledge Activation: We begin by discussing a familiar concept to reduce anxiety and build a bridge to the day's lesson.
2. Collaborative Task: We engage in a common-core aligned task, focusing on the "why" behind the formulas.
3. Reflective Practice: I lead the student through a period of reflective growth, where they explain their process to solidify their understanding.
4. Application: The student completes a task independently to demonstrate their ability to apply new strategies to rigorous problems.
What distinguishes my tutoring is my extensive background as a Senior Math Teacher and Instructional Coach within the New York City public school system. Beyond just numbers, I incorporate Social Emotional learning into my math instruction. As a long-time mentor and basketball coach, I understand how to motivate students and help them navigate the frustrations that often come with difficult subjects.
