About Samuel
Hi!
I am a positive, driven tutor who excels in building my students' confidence. I am currently working as a language assistant in a secondary school, working with GCSE French and Spanish students, following four years teaching English as a foreign language, both in groups and privately. Before this, I tutored maths privately while doing a degree in Economics at the University of Exeter.
I excelled in maths at school, achieving an A* at GCSE, an A* in maths at A-level (including 100% in both core A2 modules - C3 and C4) and an A in my further maths A-level. Even before becoming a maths tutor, I helped my classmates with maths throughout school, so you could say I've been tutoring since childhood! I've always enjoyed seeing the satisfaction in someone's face when they understand a mathematical concept, be it fractions in year 7 or complex equations in year 13. The main reason I love tutoring maths is that feeling of satisfaction and pride it can give a student.
I attained an A* in GCSE French, and recently returned from over a year living in France, where I learned the language to an advanced level. I learned Spanish to an advanced level having spent nearly two years living in South America. As someone who felt lukewarm towards languages while at school and have grown to love them, I understand students' frustrations with how they are taught. My passion for languages came from having conversations, exposure to the target language and an enthusiasm for the culture, something that is often lacking in schools. This is something that I love to bring into private tuition sessions, using the skills that I learned through four years of teaching English as a foreign language, following my CELTA qualification.
I see many similarities in the teaching of languages and the teaching of maths, as they are both subjects where many students tell themselves "I can't do it." Often my first job is to show students that these subjects are not impossible, through clear, well structured tasks of increasing difficulty, that build confidence. I refuse to believe that students are lazy or incapable, when both of these things are most commonly associated with a lack of confidence. All students are capable of hard work if they believe that it will bring results. My job is to make them believe that it will.
