About Mary
Hi, I recently graduated from the University of Bristol with a Masters in Maths. Over the past few years I have gained lots of experience tutoring both secondary and primary school students. Being very passionate about mathematics myself, I am keen to pass on this enthusiasm and help others learn. I love the challenge of finding new explanations and approaches in order for a student to understand! I believe in taking things back to basics and approaching problems in different ways until one clicks with a particular student.
My particular expertise is in helping students achieve the top grades (8s and 9s) by ensuring they a high level of mathematical understanding, and teaching techniques to maximise the mark they can gain in exams, although I have worked with students of all levels. In secondary school I achieved 9 in my GCSE maths and As in both Maths and Further Maths A levels.

I tailor my sessions to students needs and typically either focus on one topic for a session, increasing the difficulty of question as we go, or use past papers for students revising for exams. This is a great way to teach techniques for approaching questions and also highlight any gaps in knowledge.
It is my belief that students learn best when they are comfortable and feel confident to express their thoughts and make mistakes in front of their teacher. This is why I keep my lessons chilled and relaxed and create a positive, open relationship with students. I try to understand how students approach the question instinctively, so I can give them explanations and methods which align with their intuition. I also like to make connections to real world situations, or use silly analogies to keep them engaged and help them recall the content in future.
My wish is to challenge that stereotype that maths is "incredibly hard and boring and bad and evil" by creating positive memories and demonstrating the beauty of the subject. At its essence, maths is simply about finding patterns and solving puzzles. Whatever path a child chooses to pursue, it is so important that they have an understanding of numbers and data, and that they are able to think logically to find solutions to problems. That's why maths is so important, whether or not a child chooses to pursue STEM further (although I hope my students will consider it!).

Mary is so enthusiastic she is infectious! She has made maths fun for my daughter and helped to release her potential, she is a truly fantastic tutor!
We are absolutely thrilled that our daughter achieved a Grade 9 in her GCSE Maths, and we know Mary played a huge part in helping her reach that result. She has been such a fantastic tutor - patient, clear and always supportive. We are so proud of what she’s achieved and so grateful for all the guidance along the way.
I would love to recommend Mary as a maths tutor. She was extremely helpful in supporting me through revising for my maths exam in my foundation year at university. She structured our lessons in a way that expertly targeted the areas I needed most help with. She was kind and encouraging, and explained key concepts clearly and patiently. I have only positive things to say about my experience with Mary. I couldn’t recommend her more!
