About Samuel
My lesson philosophy combines hard work with inspiration. Usually, the hard work comes first before the student begins to appreciate and interpret the piece on their own terms. As such, students should practice regularly and be disciplined. One they have come prepared, I will ask them to play the piece(s) for me without interruption. We will then take them apart in small sections and work on them to build the piece up from its smaller parts. (This can be applied to both younger and more advanced students.) In the end, however, each student is unusual in some way and brings something exciting with their personality.

Hi! My name is Sam Tarasenko. I have two B.M. degrees in Music from Temple University--one in music theory and the other in music history--and I have have been teaching music for about eight years now, whether for piano, music theory, or with a choir. I love working with people who wish to learn. I firmly believe in an interdisciplinary approach where history, art, literature, and science can provide an important context for learning a piece of music. After all, notes are just blobs of ink! Music is more than just looking at a piece of paper and striking a key; by thoroughly understanding its background and origins, as well as the technical mechanics, one can appropriate it to their own experience of the world and connect to it in novel ways.
