About Mike
I started guitar lessons at the age of 13. My teacher's name was Cheryl Higgins. She was an amazing teacher and I still use some of her methods to this day. She taught me in a way that I have been able to pass on over the decades and I can truly say it was a blessing to be her student. She taught me how to read music, while giving me handwritten tablature of all the music I loved at the time which was primarily rock n roll. My 2nd year with her I took classical guitar lessons and found that challenging yet very rewarding. During high school I was able to take 3 years of Piano lab with a wonderful instructor. Her name was Elizabeth Huss. I also took 2 years of music theory, chorus and 2 years audio recording and production. I formed a band in school that opened the power and beauty of creating music. It has carried on my whole life and left me fulfilled in the most amazing way. It led to many decades of writing, recording, touring and teaching. The blessings have been exponential

My name is Mike Briggs. I have been playing guitar for over 35 years. I was very fortunate to attend school that offered piano, music theory and audio recording and production. I offer customized lessons based on the need of the student. I use Mel Bay and Hal Leonard books to teach beginner students. I have found these to be fundamental for beginners in developing the ability to read music, while learning to play guitar. I usually implement a two-tier approach for the beginners. I will often supplement the books with tablature of music that the students are interested in learning. I have found that the excitement they feel early on of playing some music they love and know will keep them on track with the teaching books that can be a little dry in the beginning. For the more advanced students I will formulate lessons based on the need that would get more into music theory including but not limited to, chords and voicings, scales and modes of music. We even get into songwriting audio recording and production. I have had many students who now have their own recording studio. I look forward to hearing from you
