About Lori Sue

I have tutored, taught, coached, and mentored students for over 40 years. I provide structured, thoughtful instruction in math, English and language arts, science, and social studies for elementary and middle school learners. My strongest subjects are math and science, including introductory concepts in food chemistry, where real-world applications help bring learning to life. I believe effective learning happens when students feel supported, respected, and clearly guided. With a background in psychology, I am trained in teaching self-administered techniques that help students calm their minds, improve focus, and approach learning with greater confidence. This allows students to ask questions freely, think more clearly, and make steady progress without pressure. Families often describe my teaching style as calm, patient, and reassuring. I am known for creating a structured yet relaxed learning environment where students feel safe, capable, and motivated to do their best work. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy spending time with my 8- and 10-year-old grandsons, reading, hiking, dancing, and baking.

My Teaching Method & Techniques:

I use a calm, confidence-building, whole-child approach to learning. Many students don’t struggle because they “can’t do the work,” but because they feel rushed, overwhelmed, or unsure of themselves. I meet students where they are and help them build understanding step by step.

My lessons combine:

Clear explanations using age-appropriate language

Guided practice with immediate feedback

Visual models, real-life examples, and interactive problem-solving

Encouragement that builds focus, resilience, and self-trust

I focus on mastery, not memorization, helping students understand the why behind what they’re learning so skills actually stick.

A Typical Lesson Plan:

Each session is structured yet flexible, based on the student’s needs:

Check-in & review
We briefly review previous material and clarify questions to build continuity and confidence.

Targeted instruction
I introduce or reinforce one core concept at a time, breaking it into manageable steps.

Guided practice
Students work through problems or exercises with my support, learning how to think through solutions.

Independent practice
I gradually step back so students can apply the skill on their own while I observe and coach.

Wrap-up & next steps
We summarize what was learned, celebrate progress, and set goals for the next session.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor

What truly sets me apart is my ability to teach without pressure while still maintaining high expectations. I create a learning environment where students feel safe asking questions, making mistakes, and growing.

I am especially skilled at:

Helping students who feel anxious, stuck, or behind regain confidence

Adapting lessons to different learning styles and pacing

Turning frustration into clarity and motivation

Students don’t just improve academically, they leave sessions feeling more capable and empowered.
Who My Lessons Are For

I work with students in Kindergarten through 8th grade in the following subjects:
