About Sumith
Hello! My name is Sumith, and I am absolutely thrilled to help you start or elevate your dance journey.
To give you a bit of background on my professional experience, I am an active instructor, performer, and community builder in the local Afro-Latin dance scene. I regularly design and teach structured curriculums, including comprehensive, multi-week Salsa, Bachata, and Kizomba courses at Haliente Dance Studio, so you can trust that my lessons are organized, progressive, and goal-oriented. I have a highly analytical approach to breaking down body mechanics, ensuring that you are learning proper, safe techniques from day one.
In addition to teaching on the floor, I frequently DJ for local Bachata and Kizomba social events. This dual perspective allows me to bring a deep understanding of musicality, song structure, and timing directly into our sessions, helping you connect with the music on a much more profound level. Furthermore, for students who want to see both sides of the dance in action, my partner, Steph, often assists with my classes to help demonstrate clear, real-time lead and follow mechanics.
Above all, I pride myself on maintaining a patient, respectful, and encouraging atmosphere. Learning to dance, especially close embrace styles, requires vulnerability and trust. My goal is to help you feel confident, connected, and musical on the social dance floor. Whether we are exploring the energy of Salsa, the connection of Bachata, or the grounded flow of Kizomba, my approach is centred on making complex movements feel natural and accessible.
Teaching Methodology & Techniques
I believe that great social dancing comes from strong fundamentals rather than just memorizing a list of patterns. My methodology is highly structured, breaking down body mechanics, weight transfer, and frame. I focus heavily on the "why" behind lead and follow techniques. By understanding the core mechanics of intension, compression, and momentum, you will be able to adapt to any partner on the social floor effortlessly.
️ A Typical Lesson Plan
Every session is tailored to your specific pacing and goals, but a standard 60-minute class generally follows this structure:
Warm-Up & Body Movement (10 mins): We start with basic steps, weight shifts, and body isolations to get warm and connect with the rhythm.
Review & Refinement (10 mins): We recap the previous lesson's concepts to ensure your foundation is solid before adding new layers.
Concept Introduction (20 mins): I introduce a new technique or sequence, meticulously breaking down the specific physical cues for both leads and follows.
Drilling to Music (15 mins): We practice the new concepts to various tempos, transitioning away from counting numbers and focusing purely on feeling the beat and partner connection.
Cool Down & Feedback (5 mins): We summarize the key takeaways, and I provide specific, actionable drills for you to practice before our next session.

What makes my classes unique is my deep focus on musicality, which is heavily influenced by my experience as a DJ for local Bachata and Kizomba social events. I don't just teach you how to step; I teach you how to actively listen to the instruments, understand song structure, and interpret the music through your movements. Furthermore, I prioritize safe, respectful, and comfortable partner connection, which is absolute key for close embrace styles like Sensual Bachata and Kizomba.
Who These Lessons Are For
My lessons are designed for adult learners of various skill levels:
Absolute Beginners: If you feel like you have two left feet, I will give you the clear, foundational tools to confidently step onto a social dance floor for the very first time.
Improver & Intermediate Dancers: If you already know your basics, we will focus on refining your technique, cleaning up your frame, mastering body manipulations, and elevating your musical interpretation.
Individuals & Couples: You do not need to bring a partner to take my classes. Individuals will learn the core mechanics of leading or following, while couples can use the sessions to build a deeper, more synchronized connection with each other.
