About Julian

I've been playing piano for upwards of 25 years and teaching for the last 16! Music is my life, passion, and livelihood. My primary background is in jazz performance; which I received a degree in at Temple University's Boyer College of Music in 2015. While jazz is my first love, through the years I've played in countless musical contexts and genres, including but not limited to: pop/rock, classical, R&B, gospel, folk, funk, soul and more. I have also composed original music for most of my career and have several albums out under the artist names "Julian Hartwell" & "Julian Hartwell Project" that are publicly available anywhere music can be found. I am comfortable teaching related subjects including music theory, music production, audio mixing, and music business coaching.

In my teaching approach I always aim to focus in on every individual student's unique gifts, needs, and potentials. I zero in on building the proper technique, theory, and competency to serve every student's ability, with the priority on Music capital M, and creative expression. I believe that music lessons can stay rewarding, fun, and gratifying if the right priorities and goals are set initially - which I always do with every student from the outset. This way, we are approaching our lessons firstly from what the STUDENT wants and needs, as opposed to a rigid, top-down structure that I assume is best. That being said, I obviously use my experience and expertise to judge what those needs and goals are/should be, and then customize accordingly. I blend a healthy mix of learning repertoire, technique, and relevant music theory principles to keep things engaging and interesting. I also believe EVERYONE can learn to improvise and creatively express themselves, so depending on the nature of our goals (and target genres) I incorporate fun exercises that encourage the right brain/more creative and spontaneous aspects of music making. My lessons are for ALL ages and ALL skill levels!
