About Mark
I am an experienced and approachable educator with 45 years’ experience of teaching and communicating science and mathematics. My previous roles include working as a professor of science, communicating science and maths for NASA and the BBC, and writing popular science books for international publishers.
This background has taught me how to explain demanding ideas clearly, accurately and imaginatively. I particularly enjoy helping pupils who have lost confidence, developed gaps in their understanding or begun to feel that maths and science are “not for them.”
I am a qualified teacher with a strong understanding of current GCSE and A-level requirements, including the WJEC curriculum. I combine academic experience with a patient, friendly and encouraging manner, and I adapt every lesson to the individual pupil.
I believe that effective tuition should do more than help a pupil complete the next piece of homework. It should develop understanding, confidence and the ability to tackle unfamiliar problems independently.

Every pupil begins in a different place, so I plan lessons around the individual rather than delivering a standard programme. During our initial conversation, I establish the pupil’s course, examination board, current working level, target grade and the particular areas in which support is needed.
Lessons typically combine:
• clear explanation of difficult concepts;
• carefully worked examples;
• guided practice followed by independent problem-solving;
• identification and correction of gaps in understanding;
• examination questions and past-paper practice; and
• advice on mathematical method, scientific reasoning and constructing high-scoring answers.
I teach GCSE and A-level Maths and Science, including Physics and Chemistry, with particular familiarity with WJEC courses. I can provide regular long-term tuition, focused revision before examinations or short-term help with a difficult topic.
My aim is not simply to supply answers. I help pupils understand why a method works, recognise when to use it and develop the confidence to apply it independently.
Online lessons last one hour. I also offer a free 30-minute introductory meeting in which we can discuss the pupil’s needs, try a representative problem and agree on an appropriate plan of study.

Perfect! Mark is very personable and my Son aged 18 gets on with him great. My Son took a gap year after GCSE's and had got a bit rusty with Physics. Mark has helped him with this and makes Physics fun! I as a parent couldn't be more pleased with Mark as a tutor for my Son. He's also a great communicator!
