About Tom
I’m a retired Kansas educator with experience as a math and computer science teacher, district technology director, and recent Algebra 1 classroom teacher. I began my career teaching math and computer science, later spent many years helping schools use technology effectively, and recently returned to the classroom to teach Algebra 1 at Falls City High School.
That recent classroom experience reminded me how many students are capable of learning Algebra when the content is slowed down and explained clearly. While teaching Algebra 1, I built my own web-based practice tools to model the way I teach: one step at a time, with hints, checks, and worked examples.
I enjoy working with students who may feel frustrated, behind, or unsure of themselves in math. My goal is to make Algebra feel less overwhelming and help students build confidence through clear explanations and steady practice.

I start each lesson by doing my best to simplify the content down to where anyone can understand it. Algebra can feel overwhelming when too many steps are shown at once, so I break the skill into smaller pieces and make sure the student understands what is happening before we move on.
After that, I use web-based practice tools that I built myself to model the way I teach. These activities give students concrete, step-by-step work with hints, checks, and worked examples when they need support. The goal is not just to get an answer, but to understand the process.
My lessons are best for Algebra 1 students, pre-algebra students preparing for Algebra 1, and students who feel behind, frustrated, or overwhelmed. I focus on building confidence with skills such as solving equations, combining like terms, graphing lines, slope, systems of equations, function notation, and exponent rules.
