About Maria

Hello! My name is Maria. I’m a Russian native speaker and experienced teacher with a master’s degree in Linguistics from Russian State University. I have been tutoring and teaching the Russian Language for the past ten years to adult professionals in the U.S. for such governmental agencies as the Department of State, Foreign Service Institute, USAID, Department of Defense, and many others for a wide range of language levels: from very beginner to advanced. My tutees and students successfully completed Russian courses in George Washington University, Georgetown, American University, William and Mary, Northern Virginia Community College, and University of Maryland. My expertise: Russian speaking, reading, listening and writing. Russian language and culture for work, education, business and travel. Russian language test preparation: preparation for Russian language proficiency tests and proficiency interviews. I have strong knowledge of the ILR scale -FSI test -OPI -DLPT Happy to help college students, since I know the college Russian program from the inside out. About the lesson

I create my lesson plans based on my students’ needs/goals and learning styles. During our lessons, we will work on: - your pronunciation - speaking (I am a fan of the communicative teaching approach) - reading and listening comprehension - grammar I provide all study materials – you do not need to buy any textbooks.

Perfect! I have tried for three years to learn Russian - through apps, other lesson platforms, and self study - but never found a method that worked for me. After only a few lessons with Maria, I'm finally beginning to make sense of the mechanics behind the language, and my spouse (who is from Russia) has commented that I have made a surprising amount of progress in such a short time.

Every lesson is well planned and exciting. We speak, read, and translate every week. Maria provides a variety of supplemental resources (e.g., books, charts), and keeps a running list of new words/phrases that come up in our lessons.

On a more personal note, I have interacted with other Russian tutors in the past, but none were remotely interested in what I wanted to learn. Maria is different. She is totally supportive of my interests, and makes it a point to introduce vocabulary and phrases that might prove useful for me. While we do have structure to our lessons - which is important - she is always willing to take time to help me understand something beyond the lesson plan. I am so grateful to have found her. She is an absolutely fantastic teacher, and I am confident that she can help me achieve proficiency in the language. I would highly recommend her to anyone else who would like to learn Russian.

Hi! I have been studying Russian for the last 3 years with almost zero results. I managed to learn some grammar but still was unable to communicate even on a basic level. Thank God I recently found Ms. Mabery! I just finished 11 lessons and finally my speaking skills got off the ground. Her lessons are well balanced between reading, listening, and speaking. I tried some other tutors and it didn't go well because they weren't prepared and had no real plan. Just had my first session with Maria and I actually learned quite a bit on the first session. She's a really friendly, patient, encouraging and experienced native Russian tutor and she comes prepared with a lot of materials that she gave me. She's great with technology and started a google doc for me. She wrote out some words so that I could see them as well as hear them and see where the intonation stress should go. It's great that she keeps documents so that I can review and also learn on my own so it's great for online learning. She offered to create audio clips for me and we worked on a basic conversation introduction so that I could be a better speaker. Can't wait for the next session.

You will pay $60 per hour for my language help and get a BIG free bonus: ALL textbooks and other additional study materials for free. I use the best and newest textbooks with my students. My hourly rate is $60 per hour because: - All textbooks and study materials are provided to my students for NO CHARGE. - I always prepare for my lessons. That means for each one hour session I take about the same time to prepare for each lesson. I take my lessons very seriously and deliver the best Russian language learning experience to my tutees. - Organized language learning sessions. - I am a very experienced educator with a degree in linguistics. I know how to deliver successful language training.
