About Michelle
I'm Dr. Michelle Cullum, and I've dedicated my career to helping students understand the world through social studies. I hold a PhD in Educational Leadership and Administration from New Mexico State University and spent over 12 years teaching history, government, and civics in middle and high school classrooms. I've taught everything from 7th grade social studies to AP-level courses and dual credit college classes.
I currently serve as a College Board AP Exam Reader, which means I'm one of the educators selected nationally to score AP exams each year. This gives me an inside understanding of exactly what students need to demonstrate on high-stakes assessments — and how to help them get there.
Outside of tutoring, I work as a freelance educational consultant, developing curriculum and instructional materials for clients across the country. I'm also a GLAD Certified Instructor, trained in strategies that make content accessible to diverse learners, including English language learners and students who need material presented in different ways to really connect with it.
I'm patient, direct, and genuinely invested in helping students build the skills and confidence they need to succeed — not just in my subject, but in how they think, write, and engage with ideas. I believe every student can do well in social studies with the right support, and I take that seriously.

I've spent over 12 years teaching social studies to middle and high school students, and I bring that real classroom experience into every tutoring session. I hold a PhD in Educational Leadership and have served as a College Board AP Exam Reader, so I know exactly what's expected on high-stakes assessments and how to help students get there.
My approach is built around meeting students where they are. I start by figuring out what clicks for them — whether they learn best through discussion, visual timelines, primary source analysis, or connecting history to what's happening in the world today. From there, I build sessions around their specific goals, whether that's pulling up a grade, preparing for an AP exam, or finally making sense of a topic that hasn't been clicking in class.
A typical session might start with a quick check-in on what's coming up in their coursework, then move into targeted work on the concepts or skills they need most. I focus on building critical thinking and writing skills alongside content knowledge, because in social studies, understanding how to think matters just as much as what to know.
I tutor students in grades 7-12 across U.S. history, world history, government, civics, economics, and AP-level coursework. I'm a great fit for students who need structured support, exam prep, or help building confidence in a subject they've been struggling with.
