My name is Dan Graydon. I am a classically-trained pianist and vocalist with a degree in K-12 music education. After receiving my degree I moved to Los Angeles to become a songwriter for other artists while working on my own artist music. I have returned to North Carolina to begin my career as a music educator and songwriting advocate.
To whom do you give lessons?
I am willing to provide music lessons for ages 8+.
What are your methods of instruction?
My masterclasses are focused first on learning and reviewing the basics of songwriting and music theory, then extending that knowledge into project-based learning. Students will learn foundations and then apply them to writing their own songs or music compositions in each session. We will focus on multiple aspects of songwriting and theory during each class, breaking apart every aspect of music, then putting it all back together at the end or a big picture moment/presentation.
What are your characteristics as a teacher?
My teaching style is dependent on what each student brings into the room. I am a firm believer that individualized education is more productive at meeting students' needs where they are, allowing them to learn at faster and more effective rates. Directing attention to positive reinforcement and eliminating the idea of required outside work/practice allows students to approach songwriting and music theory from a more creative perspective. I've seen in previous experience that giving students essential questions and smaller projects to think about outside of lessons makes more room for them to discover music in their own special way.
One of my core beliefs for teaching music is that every single student has a different idea of what music means for them. It is my job as an educator to allow them the safe space to tap into that creative potential and show them that they can continue to discover music for the rest of their lives.
Course setup
I have been teaching music in some capacity for almost ten years, whether that has been formal voice/piano lessons, directing choirs and music groups, or leading informal songwriting sessions. Many students I have taught in the past have then been inspired to make music part of their career path.
