My typical lesson consists of highlighting a specific spelling pattern. We will practice decoding and encoding words containing the targeted pattern. Next we will transfer the skill using a passage containing words with the targeted pattern. Finally, we will practice answering questions about the passage to support comprehension. We may write about the passage to reinforce written expression. This lesson touches on all important components of reading; decoding, spelling, fluency, and comprehension.
