About Charles
The first thing I feel compelled to say is that I am a committed and passionate teacher, with experience in education across all ages. My experience in teaching started whilst working for Camp Leaders in America. I lived with and looked after a dozen twelve-year-old’s for 3 months and planned long camping and canoeing trips across the great lakes of Minnesota. When I returned from America, I started a fantastic role with the St George’s Catholic School for Boys where I worked as a cover teacher. Following a highly successful first year, I was promoted to having my own tutor group for my pastoral work along with timetabled lessons in Drama and P.E. My role extended to behaviour training for qualified teachers and more advanced pastoral interventions for children with special needs. This school also has the most multicultural intake in Southampton which gave me valuable experience, teaching classes with a large proportion of EAL (English as an Additional Language) students
After leaving St George’s school, I took up a unique opportunity to play rugby in Australia. When the contract finished I moved to Sydney where I worked as a Career and Education Consultant – I helped guide people in making the next steps in their career. This required me to quickly learn about another country’s jobs market and the education system. This was a fulfilling and valuable experience which developed my skills, teaching a whole new age range, whilst working for a successful company in the private sector. Although I was successful in this role being promoted to manager in charge of 20 staff, I decided that I needed to return to England to achieve my dream of becoming a qualified teacher. Working with adults and secondary students who have negative memories in education, I noticed that often their bad experiences start at primary level. This gave me the vision to use my abilities and become a primary school teacher, I was determined to return to England to complete my training.
Once I returned to England, I worked for 15 months as a teaching assistant at the Holy Trinity Primary School. I gained experience working 1 - 1 with special needs children, whilst supporting all children in the school at various times. I also taught lessons whilst the main class teacher was away.
When my contract with the school had finished, I started my PGCE course in Primary Education at The University College of St Mark and St John. My strengths highlighted are my ability to form professional relationships, have a high standard of behaviour management and a relentless enthusiasm to inspire children with creative lessons plans.
After the Post Graduate degree, I worked for Education First in Torquay, England. During my short contract I was awarded Teacher of the Week for my creative lesson plans and relationships I had built with the international students I was teaching.
My last employment was with Hankai school based in Nanjing, China. I was the head of mathematics and ICT for the primary school as well as teaching drama and Asdan. The experience was challenging as it was a promotion in responsibility, as well as teaching in a foreign country to students who spoke limited English. However, I do fully appreciate the experience and I feel that I have added to my teaching abilities.
I love any challenge and would relish the chance to contribute all my ideas and passion

I base my classes on the idea of all children going through a positive experience. This sounds simple, but it’s something I’m passionate about and I take a lot of time and care over my lesson plans.
The idea of creating an experience is about reliving the least boring lesson possible. To my mind all children are individuals with unique personalities, abilities and interests. For example, this means some children will appreciate spending more time outdoors, or they might learn more in a group/ social activity. Children’s learning styles will all be different , creating an experience tailored to their needs and being ready to deliver those lessons, is fundamental to my teaching methodology.
