About Andrew

I was originally born and raised in Washington DC where I began performing professionally at a young age. I played piano in a high school jazz band that won local and state competitions yearly, The Montgomery County All-Star Ensemble, the Blues Alley Youth Ensemble, The Grammy Awards Mid-Atlantic Regional ensemble, and performed in numerous club dates and private gigs. All this while studying jazz with Ron Elliston and Robert Redd, and classical with Richard Pollock. I left DC for New York City at 17 to live and study at The New School’s Mannes Conservatory and Jazz and Contemporary Music Program. While there I played numerous gigs and performances with burgeoning and in-demand classmates, while studying classical piano with Benita Meshulam and jazz with Bill Charlap and Haim Cotton, the latter being a master instructor and co-founder of The New York Piano Academy, where I eventually began my teaching career in 2005. I moved back to Washington DC in 2011 and started teaching students full time, as well as performing at various venues like The Kennedy Center, Bohemian Caverns, Twins Lounge, The Green Island Cafe and Tryst in Adams Morgan, the Jazz in the Sculpture Garden series, as well as numerous private engagements, including the Austrian Embassy and The Democratic Club of Washington, to name a few.
I have held several recitals for my students to perform in, and have coached several students through the completion of the ABRSM exam. Let me help you find your voice on the piano, demystify the wonders of the instrument, and give you the confidence to continue your studies and playing well after we’re done!

About the lesson

I meet you where you are - a pure beginner or a semi-pro - teaching you material and technique that you seek to learn. I like knowing that with my experience I can answer any question you may have, from why a note looks the way it does to advanced musical theory. I want you to be able to truly enjoy playing as quickly as possible, both the songs that you love and classics from the repertoire. Whether it’s Taylor Swift or Tchaikovsky, all music contains expression and can appeal to each individual in a different way. We find out what you want and work to achieve your goals.
