About Matthew

Hello! My name is Matthew James, and I’m a Japanese language tutor based in the UK.

I’ve been teaching languages for over 8 years, mostly in Japan, where I worked with students of all ages and levels. I also have experience in educational publishing, so if you're aiming for a qualification like the JLPT, I can help you prepare effectively.

In my lessons, I focus on building your confidence and keeping things enjoyable. I use a clear structure, fun warm-ups, and lots of practical speaking and listening activities—because learning a language should be exciting, not stressful!

Whether you're learning for travel, exams, work, or just for fun, I’ll tailor each lesson to your goals. I also bring in cultural insights from my 18 years of living in Japan to help make the language really come alive.

About the lesson

I believe students learn best when they feel confident and enjoy their lessons. That’s why I focus on creating a positive, supportive learning environment tailored to each student's goals and learning style.

Our lessons will follow a clear structure to help you stay focused and make steady progress. After we discuss your objectives, I’ll create a lesson plan that suits your needs. Every session begins with a short, fun warm-up to help you start thinking in Japanese and ease any nerves. I’ll then introduce new content, explain key points, and guide you through interactive practice activities. We’ll end each lesson with a quick review and suggestions for optional practice at home.

I adapt my teaching approach to each student, but I always aim to make lessons lively and engaging. Language learning takes practice—but it should never be dull.

I taught English in Japan for eight years, working with learners of all ages and abilities. I also have eight years of experience in educational publishing in the UK and Japan, including developing and managing language exams. If you're preparing for a qualification, I can help.

I passed the JLPT N1 with 89% on my first attempt in 2015, and I’ve received multiple national awards in Japanese calligraphy. With 18 years living in Japan, I bring deep cultural insight to my lessons. You can read more about me at (concealed information)
