About Catherine
I have worked as a Substitute Teacher and Education Assistant for over 16 years. Prior I worked in Human Services as a Youth Counsellor the later as a Case Worker for Children and families.
I have taught all subjects and taught literacy both in class and in a resource room ( Learning Assistance Centre) environment in groups and one on one. I have also worked with with special needs and create unique plans to help students bridge the gap with their unique learning styles.
I recall working with a small group of Grade 2 students whom had leaning disabilities such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, ADHD, and Autism. My job was to teach them math. I understood that each of these learning styles shared a commonality which was a problem with following sequential patterns. So before working on the math we worked on playing games that focused on follow sequences and doing music which focuses on strengthening neuro-networks that are in charge of sequencing. When the time came to actually do the math problems the students were able to catch on much quicker after doing these sequencing exercises disguised as games and fun.
My music background starts as child where I had special permission to leave school to take music lessons during the day. I first trained in piano. I was also involved with my public school choir and community junior choir. In high school I took up the flute both in private lessons with Cathy Chernauskas and in concert band (first chair) and continued to sing with both the concert choirs and jazz choirs. I graduated from Carson Graham Secondary's Visual and Performing Arts Diploma program. I also sang with the BC Girls Choir. I took instruction with a student of Nona Marie's in West Vancouver, then with Ray Carole of the Platters. I performed in and around Vancouver until moving to Ottawa where I attended university. There, I sang under Lawrence Euwashko at the University of Ottawa.
In recent years I have continued singing with Silverlining Management in Vancouver while remaining in Ottawa.

Learning should fun and stress free. Everybody learns differently.
I have worked with an array of students from Special Needs to Gifted for over 16 years. I also worked in Human Services for a number of years prior. I have seen how life situations can impact learning and be mistaken for a learning disability or problems with attention.
My approach to teaching is holistic and in some cases I am able to go "in the back door" to help a student figure out how a problem works. It's really cool to see their face when a challenging concept "clicks". I've helped many students become successful.
A music teacher I understand that the voice is a delicate instrument that needs careful guidance for the singer to fully develop their voice technically without straining it. There is also a personal growth factor in becoming a singer that evolves into personal expression, confidence and leadership. This is why it is so important to have the right coach.
My background as a performer, teacher and human service worker has provided me with the ideal experience to coach other up and coming singers whether you want to sing for yourself, in a local venue, choir or have larger aspirations. Music Lessons are 30 minutes long at $50.00.
