About Mel
I hold a master's degree in Educational Leadership in Higher Education, my passion is assisting adult learners finding their footing, whether that's an ESL student building confidence in a new language or someone working toward their GED after years away from the classroom. I teach a weekly GED prep class at a nonprofit community center, where I've seen firsthand how much adult literacy work is really about meeting people where they are, without judgment, and helping them see progress they can feel. I bring that same patience and respect to every lesson, because the goal isn't just passing a test, it's building both skills and confidence to keep learning long term.

My teaching methods and techniques begin with an assessment and diagnosis rather than launching into a course study. My goal is to find out what students already know and where their specific gap is. I'll walk students toward a concept with guiding questions or a worked example, rather than handing them a definition. I also check for understanding actively. I'll ask students to explain something back in their own words, try a slightly varied problem, or predict what happens next.
Typical lesson:
1) Quick check-in: what are you working on and where did you get stuck?
2. Diagnose the gap: a targeted question or two to pinpoint the actual misconception
3. Core explanation: focus on the gap specifically, not a re-teach of the whole topic
4. Guided practice: a problem or example we work through together, with me prompting rather than solving
5. Independent attempt: students try a similar problem solo. I watch for where it breaks down
6. Wrap-up: a quick summary of the concept, and what to practice before next time.
Adjust according to the student's needs, it varies from person-to-person.
