About Maria

Teaching children has been the focus of my life, both in a school setting and at home with my children. I have 8 kids ranging between 4 years old all the way up to 23. I even have 2 grandchildren! I first started my teaching career with 3-year-olds at a Catholic preschool. I had 20 little ones in the classroom. I then moved on to teaching 1st grade in another Catholic school, with up to 30 children each year. I loved teaching this age group! The students would come in, most of them not knowing how to read yet, but by the end of the school year, the transformation was incredible! I really enjoyed seeing these children blossom. After getting married and having my first child, I stayed at home to take care of her and to eventually have 8 children in all, including twins. I homeschooled all of my children from the start and have graduated 3 of them. The oldest went on to receive a Bachelor's in English and Writing and the next two are presently in college. It is wonderful to be able to see them progress every step of the way. For the past 10 years I have been a homeschool evaluator in Virginia. I meet with families in person or online to go over their school year and determine if the child(ren) have made adequate progress. I enjoy meeting these families and seeing all the wonderful curricula out there. Every family is different but they have one thing in common - they want what is best for their children!

About the lesson

My specialty is in teaching reading, although I am confident in all elementary subjects. I am very patient with my students and try to approach subjects from different angles, finding the best method for the individual student. I often use a hands-on approach, especially with reading instruction, mimicking the way natural readers learn. A usual lesson will include sorting words into phonetic categories so that the student internalizes the various word patterns. I am able to assess each student in order to know where to begin phonics instruction. I am available to meet in person at a local library or online.

Details

In person rate of $45/hour includes meeting at one of the following locations: Manassas City Library, Central Library in Manassas, Bull Run Library, or Vita Nova in Nokesville. To travel beyond these locations, the travel fee is $5/mile. Meeting at your home is not an option.
