About Cheviot
I am a teaching assistant working at a SEND school and specialising in maths. I have a Bachelor's in Psychology and have gained a solid understanding in basic mathematics (up to GCSE Higher) from my primary and secondary education in China. I have a DBS Enhanced certificate and have been told by colleagues that I am a great teacher. I strive to make my lessons fun, engaging, and relevant to my pupils' everyday life. I offer a 30-minute free assessment session for all interested pupils so that you can have a taste of my teaching style before making any commitments. Rates listed are based on 60-minute lessons. I have 7 years of experience working with children and adults and I specialise in improving mathematics skills in pupils working at Upper KS2 to GCSE Higher levels. I follow the philosophy of "Stage not Age" to build on my pupils' existing knowledge and skills. I completed my basic maths education in China and have thus developed a deep, flexible understanding of my subject knowledge as well as test-taking skills. Whether you're looking to catch up, help with homework, expand from school learning, or get ready for exams, I am confident that we can work together to achieve the goal you have in mind. My focus for KS2 and 3 pupils are typically: mastering basic arithmetic skills, deepening understanding of basic concepts, reading comprehension, flexible application of skills, and curiosity and appreciation of the learning material. My focus for KS 4 pupils (including some Year 9 pupils) are: flexible application of basic skills and concepts, logical reasoning, finding out one's own problem-solving styles, test-taking skills, and curiosity and appreciation of the learning material. I offer 30 or 60-minute lessons for pupils working at upper KS2 and KS3 levels, depending on need. GCSE lessons are typically 60 minutes long. Free assessment: In order to help my pupils at their level, I offer a 30-minute free assessment where we discuss goals and needs. Although parent input is welcome, I believe it is important to hear my pupils' views too as they will be the ones putting in the hard work! I will also choose a topic to deliver a sample mini-lesson to give my pupils a taste of my teaching style. At the end of this assessment session, you can decide whether you'd like to work with me, how often, and for how long. For pupils booking regularly (at least once a week for at least 6 weeks), I am also happy to provide brief pointers or additional sessions between regular sessions should pupils encounter a very difficult problem elsewhere.
