About David

I am an accomplished artist and painting instructor who teaches my students on how to discover their creative side, remove the “mind-blocks” that can prevent creativity, and help them develop their painting and drawing skills through practical art lessons.

I received my Bachelor of Fine Art from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1981 with a concentration in commercial art, painting, and drawing. Over the years my art took a backseat to my full-time occupation as the Executive Director of a Christian youth summer camp and retreat center, Pleasant Vineyard Ministries, but my creativity did not. Utilizing my creative talents, I enjoyed creating camp programs that would not only excite children but teach them a skill and challenge them mind, body, soul, and spirit.

In 2014 I left the camp and returned to my passion of drawing and painting. Since then I have won several purchase awards, juried art shows, and have received several painting commissions. I now teach in house painting classes at Hobby Lobby Stores, Michaels Art Stores, and AC Moore in Dayton, Ohio.

I have developed an art program that teaches those who want to learn how to paint and draw or take their skills to another level while incorporating truths that help free a person from the blocks that stifle creativity.

I believe we are all creative beings and therefore each of us has a yearning in our soul to create. We have a desire to somehow find fulfillment by connecting our hearts and minds with our hands, voice, and body in artistic expression. For some, such as myself, it is rooted deep in our spirit. For others, it is a temporal experience, a calling to relate to the world around them and express themselves artistically. In either case, this creative desire wells up from within our soul and looks for outlets through the arts but occasionally we hit a blockage that prevents us from allowing ourselves to create. When we fear picking up the artist pencil or paintbrush, we internally squelch those desires. I strive to help my students safely confront those issues and demonstrate practical ways to overcome and free up their creativity.

I also believe we are spiritual beings and our soul also yearns for truth. This insatiable desire to know that there is much more to this life and to connect with someone or something far greater than ourselves often leads one to a “spiritual pilgrimage. During this journey, many seek to know the true identity of the Master Creator who instilled this desire to know him, who encourages us to express our creativity, and more importantly, who desires that we come to know he truly does love each of us.

In these lessons my objective is to bridge these two desires by offering instructional lessons, workshops and online video lessons that will help people explore their creative side, eliminate the road blocks that hinder their creative process, learn painting and drawings techniques, and discover the Master Creator in the process.

I started teaching art lesson when I was the Executive Camp Director for a childrens summer camp. I taught a variety of weeklong camp programs including art to summer camp children and eventually began teaching adults at our local Michaels and Hobby Lobby stores.

About the lesson

I teach basic painting and drawing skills to both beginning and intermediate artists.

Develop students’ confidence in using painting and drawing as a primary medium for artistic expression.
Develop students’ ability to verbalize ideas and processes in art making.
Develop understanding of history, major styles and contemporary issues in painting.

COURSE CONTENT & SCOPE:
Color Theory: Color wheel (primary/secondary, complementary), transparency/opacity, hue, value (intensity, brightness), chroma (saturation, purity) & temperature (warm/cold).
Color Contrast & Attributes: Interaction, harmony, psychology/mood, culture & expression.
Composition: Space, movement, balance, asymmetry, rhythm, shapes, proportion & lighting.
Painting Techniques – Styles, brush techniques, Bob Ross style,
Acrylic: Gel medium (heavy/regular/soft, gloss/semi-gloss/matte), texture medium
Overcoming Artist Blocks; your inner critic, comparison, artists fear, art truths that transform and free creativity, hurts that block the soul from expression

All level and skills. From those who have never lifted a paint brush to those who are skills artists who want to take their art to the next level.

Don't expect to be a Monet after the first lesson, but expect to grow on your journey. I always tell my students that 80% of creating art is learning techniques and 20% is skill. Your skills increase the more your practice your art through the techniques taught. Unfortunately, most aspiring artists give up because of lack of skill and their inner art critic. Learning to paint and draw takes courage to overcome self criticism and criticism from others. Art is a journey, your journey, not someone elses. It is a way to express yourself and it is for you only. Share your art when you are ready and don't listen to the lies that block your creativity.
