About Gene

Hello all! For years, I have been studying and using my skills as an actor to develop my own abilities and work to create real, interesting human beings on stage and screen that tell stories of value, and connect with the audience in a meaningful way. Beyond my passion for acting is my passion for coaching; working one-on-one with actors or in small groups has always been exciting and energizing for me, and I'm thrilled to be able to offer my services to you here. Whether you want to work generally on your skills or on a particular skill in acting for stage or screen, want coaching for an audition, or just want to have some questions answered, I am so excited to offer my services to you.

One day, while on set, I was sitting across from a very talented actor who was stuck. He revealed to me that he felt confused and out of place; after ten minutes of coaching him through some character development, he felt empowered and excited (and gave a great performance!) It was then that I realized I loved working one-on-one with actors.

I have studied acting with a professional theatre artist who founded her own company, at the collegiate level for some time, and in New York at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, HB Studio, Kimball Studio, and UCB.

About the lesson

I believe that it's very important to connect personally with anyone I'm working with- I like to start out by learning a little bit about each other and learning about the new student's goals. Then, I want to learn about what specifically you're looking to get out of working with me. After this, I'll decide how I would like to proceed as a coach, and then we can get down to business!

I have mostly worked with my peers, both on set, on stage, and in classroom settings; my favorite work to do with a student is to coach them through a particular set of sides, portion of a script that's sticking them, or through a particular question that they're trying to answer.

In my time as a student, I found that the best way to identify the best teacher for yourself is to talk to them one-on-one. Do they listen to you respectfully and consider your viewpoints, or do they seem stuck in their opinions and unwavering in their self-defense? Are they kind? Interesting? You have to like your teacher and admire them as a person before they can mold you in any meaningful way.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should evaluate their teachers as I described before; do you like them? Respect them? Trust them? It's very important to know, like, and trust anyone who you are allowing to shape or mold you or your craft in any way. Also, especially for new actors, I think it's a must to consider what you want to achieve, and what you're willing to sacrifice to achieve it. While many will tell you that actors have to do "whatever it takes," the truth is that we're humans first, and we all have our limits. What are yours? Your teachers won't know these when they advise you, and you must be comfortable being honest and asking for the reasoning behind your teachers' advice.
