About Sean

I am interested in the behavior of the the student. For, “In the behavior lies the truth of acting,” (S. Meisner) Therefor, I am concerned with guiding the student to the full availability of themself and to their partner. It is not for an actor to contort him/herself into another person or circumstance. Rather, it is for him/her to access and activate what already lives within the whole of his/herself. From out this availability, from out truly listening and responding, the actor is freed from their head to live from out their heart, to follow their impulses, to... “behave truthfully.” It is then that the actor lifts the words off the page and gives them meaning. This is when a performance is most alive for the actor and audience.

I believe this is not only the basis for a successful technique but one of greatest fulfillment and generosity. To act and see great acting can be magical but it is not mysterious. Like an instrument it can be taught and learned. Only, the actor is his or her own instrument. Technique allows the actor to fly like a beautifully played violin.

When I first set out to study acting, I did so with a visceral desire for an experience I could not yet define. I only began to understand the first time I stepped into a room where the students seemed to live every moment, really speaking to each other, not 'show' emotion but be effected in the moment. It was exciting and I wanted to be a part of that. Eventually that room became the kind of space I wanted to create and lead. I have worked with students who were beginning their journey toward acting, professionals seeking to reinvigorate their craft and those who simply came with a desire for an experience they couldn't define. Whatever the scenario, the pinnacle of my joy arrives when a student discovers a side of themselves they've never known or dared explore. These are the moments when an actor really starts to fly. They have given over to themself, their imagination and to their partner.

I started teaching with the aforementioned Louise Lasser. One day she called me to say she was sick and couldn't come in. I had become her assisant by that point and it was my responsibility to alert the other students. She told me not to and that I should take over for her. Stunned and intimidated I did. I experienced the unassuming and unexpected thrill of leading student actors through the work. In time I would be teaching her students in an independent class. The thrill never went away.

I began studying acting at at HB Studio in New York City. HB is the foundational home of Uta Hagen and so where I discovered and trained for three years in her way of working. I would also become a member of HB's company and complete a Hagen Teaching program. Their I'd also discover the Meisner technique under the tutiledge of tutalege of Louise Lasser. She would invite me on to her personal studio where I completed my Meisner training. I have been teaching in her studio since 2014.

Subsequently, I received my MFA in Theatre Directing from the LIR Academy at Trinity College Dublin

About the lesson

My work is deeply rooted in the active principles and methodologies of the great acting teachers, Sanford Meisner and Uta Hagen. I employ the canon of their work to bring the student through a program that sets and continues to build upon a foundation which ultimately becoms, for the actor, a true personal technique: A way to work... to live on the stage or in front of the camera.

I am interested in the behavior, for their lies the truth of acting. It releases the actor from their head and opens them up to themselves and their own unique talents.

I have worked with students betwween the ages of 16 and 50 years of age, novice to prossesional, with individuals and in classes up to 12. Some of these students came came seeking foundational technique at the outset of an acting career. Some were returning to the class room to reinvigerate their work. Others came only with a curiosity and a drive to discover.

Try to know their person. The ethos of the person with whom you study is as important as their expertise. All acting techniques are aimed at the same goal: as Meisner put it, "to live truthfully under imaginary circumstances." But if you really want to experience the thrill of living in your acting and have a craft that serves to fulfill that desire, you want someone who activates the whole breadth of you. Their are 'tricks' of the trade to be sure and some come in handy. But if you are receiving only the tools for result oriencted work it will not be enough to stimulate or sustain you through.
