About Owen

We are a theater company dedicated to helping new and experienced artists grow in their chosen discipline, theater. We specialize in workign with emerging playwrights, actors, and directors. Many of our acting students end up working on our mainstage productions after a year or two of study.

I personally love watching a new actor connect their whole being with a character and become that character. The process is very rewarding.

I have been a professional theater artists for thirty years. I've perfomred in over 100 shows and directed over 50. My training in acting and directing come from George Mason University and The Washington Shakespeare Theatre. I have an MFA in Writing for Stage and Screen and am currently pursuing a Ph.D.

About the lesson

I usually evaluate students in an interview and audition process, to determine what their obvious needs are. I also want to know what the student wants to work on and develop, so that focused lessons are planned to address those wants. As we work, we will explore growth beyond what was first expressed and evaluated for the mission of Lab is to always be growing as artists.

Find out if they are working, you want someone who is currently working with success. Do they keep up on the growth and changes in techniques, are they versed in many or only one, if so which. Do they believe in collaborative learning? What is there teaching style? Can they let you speak to former students so that you can hear about their experience with you as an instructor?

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out

Do they have a plan of progression for their students or do they just plan as your grow (stay away from the later). Teaching is not a wing it thing, it requires training. Not all actors or directors are teachers, make sure they actually make a lesson plan and know what each lesson is going to be. Ask for a sample syllabus, that will tell you right off.
