About Anna

I started teaching during high school when I got involved in a program called Youth Development Organization (YDO), which helps underserved children from the neighboring communities. I tutored mainly 3rd to 5th grade math and helped students catch up to the Core Curriculum. During this time, I also helped in the evenings at Math Study Center, which is a school-led studying center that helps kids who need extra help with their program. After highschool, I seeked out a professional tutoring company and was hired by both Eduwell and Princeton Review.

I graduated from Phillips Academy Andover from the Cum Laude Society in 2019 and will be attending Columbia University in Fall 2020. In high school, I completed the precalculus series, trigonometry, BC Calculus, Multivariable Calculus, and Linear Algebra. My SAT score is 800 in Math and 730 in English. For my experiences working with kids, during my junior and senior years of high school, I was part of the Youth Development Organization where I taught 3rd to 5th graders math, such as fractions, basic algebra, etc. to catch them up to the Common Core Curriculum. Each week I would plan a lesson for them, answer their homework questions, or engage them in a math game. At Phillips Academy, I was also a part of the Math Study Center where I answered homework questions for high schoolers. During my gap year, I have also tutored kindergarteners and taught 10th grade math/english at a private tutoring firm called Eduwell. Additionally, I have been a dance instructor at Todos Dance and Fitness Studio for the past 3 years where I taught both individual and group classes. These past experiences have shown me how to communicate concepts effectively, adapt to different learning speeds and styles, help students understand their mistakes and progress. I work well with kids because I am positive and engaging, yet focused and patient. (Hired by Princeton Review and Eduwell so I have professional experience.)

My tutoring strategy depends on the student and their learning style. For younger students, such as kindergarteners, I print out worksheets and help them work through basic math and spelling since they need more guided learning. As students get older, for example my Test Prep students, I like them to do an initial practice test and evaluate what skills they need more work on and which skills they have already mastered. By doing so, I like to strengthen their weaknesses and build their knowledge, rather than reviewing skills they already have. Besides the material itself, test preparation is also about testing techniques and speed with accuracy which I help students develop through practice drills, homework, and targeted reading.

I have worked with various students from kindergarten up to 12th grade. With kindergarteners to 5th grade, I have helped catch them up to their school curriculum. During COVID-19, I have taught kindergarteners who needed more worksheets and lessons than their school offered. As a person who attended a private school, I have helped students apply to various private schools including Governors, Phillips Andover, Phillips Exeter, Milton, etc. With highschoolers, I have been a volunteer at the Study Center who helps with homework and I have been a year-long tutor for 10th graders in Math and English.
