My name is Steve Garrett and I live in Guildford. I am a motivated and engaged self-starter, a recent PhD graduate from the University of Surrey in Materials Sciences.
I have spent a lot of time teaching over the past four years supporting senior staff in delivering the University of Surrey’s engineering mathematics course, laboratory sessions, and ‘introducing MATLAB’ course. As a private tutor I also supported two year 11 students through the turbulence of 2020 to achieve their GCSE in physics. My GCSE students far exceeded their predicted grades, one receiving a grade '7' and the other a '9'.
The teaching element of my role at Surrey very quickly became my favourite. I found it energising to engage with the undergraduates, whose love for the subject and enthusiasm was infectious. I enjoyed reaching the ‘aha!’ moment with them, especially with regards to complex problems, and it was a real pleasure to see them take on instruction and be able to usefully apply the knowledge I had shared with them.
I believe I am a good teacher because I can see the working parts of a complex issue, and I can explain each stage sequentially and logically so that an understanding gradually emerges, much like slowly engaging the dimmer switch of a light in a brightening room.
I am able to teach both Physics and Maths at GCSE and A-Level.
