About Adam

Hey there! My name is Adam and I'm a graduate student in Electrical Engineering.

Until recently, I had a very tumultuous relationship with math and science. I even chose an undergraduate degree in Economics from San Jose State University because I feared math and science so much. I couldn't seem to grasp what everyone else seamingly understood so easily. I remember having anxiety simply from the thought of anything STEM related.

It wasn't until I went back to college and took Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry a few years ago that things changed. I discovered what was missing. A patient and dedicated professor. Dr. Fineman explained concepts to me over and over...and over with the utmost patience. Instead of getting irritable at my continued confusion, he would try to find a different angle from which to explain it. He brought things down step-by-tiny-step and checked to make sure I was following at each miniature step.

This is how and why I want to teach you. I know what it's like to have math and science concepts explained to you poorly and in a hurry. I know the trauma it induces in the student when he/she feels behind the teacher's pace. I've been there.

I want to be the tutor that I wish had in high school.

I've been tutoring in-person for the past 3 years at Mission College as a part-time job during my graduate studies. I can safely say that I've never abandoned a student and left them without a clear understanding of their question.

The courses I tutor are listed below.

Math:

Arithmetic Algebra I Geometry Algebra II Trigonometry Pre-Calculus Calculus AB Calculus BC Multivariable Calculus Differential Equations Linear Algebra

Science:

Newtonian Physics Electricity & Magnetism Thermodynamics Circuits

Looking forward to meeting and working with you!

I get many students who are completely bewildered and dishearted from their struggles in a subject. I myself have never forgotten that feeling.

Working through that confusion and frustration from the ground up--little by little--is so fulfilling for me. My favorite expression from students is when they say things like, "Oh, I get it! Why didn't my teacher explain that way?" or "It's so simple when you break it down."

These are the statements from prior students of mine that really give me purpose because I can't imagine someone giving up on their goals due to sloppy and inpatient teaching. Everyone can do math and science; students just need a calm and empathetic tutor.

It is usually a great help if the student can send me a brief synopsis of what they're struggling with about a day prior to our tutoring session. A screenshot of their homework and/or perhaps a few pages from the chapter they want help from. This way I can be as prepared as possible for the tutoring session.

At the tutoring session, I like to hear what someone's thought process is as they approach a concept they don't understand. Have them think out loud. This way I get a sense of where they're at and I can work a student through the confusion by piggybacking on their thought process--not my own. This way students make breakthroughs that feel authentic. I try to provide hints and clarification tactfully to help the student discover an understanding on their own.

I have worked predominantly with freshmen science students in college. However, since many high school students take community college courses in the Summer to get a head start, I have worked with many high school students as well.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I had a professor once tell me that framing a good question is 50% to an answer.

If you can work through exactly what question you want to ask, oftentimes you discover the answer yourself. And even if you don't, you get to where the answer as on the tip of your tongue and a teacher need only supply that small clarification. Then it all makes sense.

However, I completely understand the times when you don't even know where to begin. When you don't even know what to ask. In these cases, ask your teacher if he/she would be willing to dissect the previous lecture or chapter from the beginning--line by line. This way you can pause and ask questions before proceeding with the review.
