About Sebastian

I played baseball competitively until the age of 31. Since then I have coached my daughter and son in baseball and basketball, while also coaching Caroline County Little League. I played baseball at Merritt Island High School, primarily as a centerfielder. I also pitched and played short stop. M.I.H.S. had a prolific baseball program that produced back to back to back Florida State 6A Championships, in the mid to late 90s. I've been told by many friends that watching a live baseball game with me, is like watching a movie with someone who's seen it before. I'm able to observe and anticipate for the most part, what should or is likely about to happen, pitch by pitch. With that, I am able to teach kids how to react defensively from the time the ball leaves the pitcher's hand, until where and how the ball is hit, or if it just hits the catcher's mitt. With pitchers 12 and under, I prefer to teach them about location with just the fastball and changeup. If a parent and athlete are comfortable with having the kid learn the mechanics of a curveball/slider, that is actually my favorite pitch to teach ! From the offensive side, I teach the fundamentals of plate discipline, early pitch recognition, and hitting the ball to all fields. I teach a lot of base running fundamentals, including some advanced techniques. Running through first base, making sure not to turn towards the playing field, except if there is an errant throw allowing the runner to easily advance to 2nd base. Getting a good secondary lead, especially from first base. Picking up the first base coach right out of the box, to prepare for rounding first base. Picking up and listening to the 3rd base coach for many reasons. Looking for bunt, steal, hit and run, take a pitch, or any coach designed plays. Rounding 2nd and running to 3rd to see if the runner should get to 3rd base standing, slide into 3rd base, or round 3rd and head for home while looking for the on deck batter to see if a slide into home plate is needed. Basically, a lot of situational awareness/anticipation depending on the base, the score, how the defense is set up, etc. I love the game of baseball, and can teach it for any purpose from just having fun, to teaching kids that are already determined to play in high school or further.
