About April
As a high school student, I worked with elementary school-age students through an after-school program teaching all subjects. As a college student, I began teaching as a volunteer at my school. There was a need for tutors and I was able to donate my spare time to fill in the gap. I then began tutoring independentlyly. I very much enjoyed this experience and wanted to continue to tutor in the future.
As for CPR/First Aid, I have been an EMT for over 5 years and have volunteered for a first aid and rescue squad for over 7 years. I obtained my certification for teaching in an effort to train our own members and those in the community more efficiently.

When I connect with a new student, the first thing I like to do is get to know them. I like to spend a few minutes talking about them, their interests, hobbies, favorite and least favorite subjects, and methods of learning. I use this newfound knowledge to help me design and direct future sessions with the student. I will incorporate their interests and hobbies (if applicable) into their lesson plans to teach them in a way that will continuously engage them. I will use learning techniques that work for them to ensure that the student is getting the most out of each session. If the student is willing, a 5-10 minute learning style test can be administered to pinpoint the student's learning style based on a series of questions. This is one of the most beneficial techniques available.
I have worked with a variety of students at different levels. I have worked with grades K-12 and undergraduate level students (including adult learners). Grades K-5, I have tutored in subjects such as reading, writing, math, social studies, Spanish, etc. Grades 6-12 and undergraduate students, I have tutored primarily in the maths and sciences but occasionally in other subjects as well. I have had experience with students in special education programs in both elementary school and college.
I would advise students who are looking to hire a tutor in the maths and sciences, to find someone who tends to their individual learning style. The tutor should listen to their student and create lesson plans to match the learning methods preferred by the student. For example, if a student is a hands-on learner, the tutor should favor that teaching method when working with that student. The benefit of having a tutor over in-class teaching is that the tutor has the ability to individualize their lesson to meet each of their student's independent needs, and they should be doing just that. They should also be searching for someone who is attentive to their successes and failures, noting what has worked and what has not. They should then be retailoring their teaching based on this information. Find someone who is there for YOU as a student.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
- What works best for me as a student? What type of learner am I?
- What do I need to do to get the most out of my session?
- What does my tutor need to do for me to get the most out of my session?

I am an adult learner attending college after almost 20 years. April treated me no different than I would expect being an 18-year-old freshman in college for the first time. She was patient and adaptive and able to assist me with content that I was struggling with. I have used her services for a few years and plan to continue.
April was wonderful! She took her time to make sure my son understood the material in a way that worked best for him! She was able to incorporate items we had around the house into his lesson for him to better grasp the concept. Would highly recommend!!!
