About Carl

With over 30 years experience in the medical setting ranging from the military to the hospital settings, Emergency Management Specialists was designed to encompass training, medical stand bys and medical products such as custom first aid kits.

I am Carl Hawke, the owner operater of Emergency Management Specialists. I am a liciensed EMT in Missouri and have been teaching BLS, Heartsaver CPR and first Aid for over 20 years. I havve worked at a few of the local hospitals here in Kansas City.

I know what it is like to lose someone to heart disease and heart attack. This was the driving force of for the business in teaching others how to save lives.

October 1, 2005: That is a day that sticks to my very core. My father wasn't feeling too well that day and he went to lie down. By 5:30 that evening he was abruptly woken up out of a dead sleep by chest pain.  He came walking by me rubbing his chest.  I suggested he go to the ER to get checked out.  He blew it off like most people do (denial) saying it was due to heartburn. I asked if he needed me to stay home and he said “No. go have fun. I will be ok.”  Then not even 30 minutes later, I received a panicked call from my mother saying dad was going to the hospital via ambulance after having collapsed in the bathroom.  Five days later he was taken off all life support machines. But to end on a great note, He was able to see all of his grandchildren prior to his passing.

I do not mean to tell a sad reality, but this is a very common story for many families around the nation.  According to the Center for Disease Control, 610,000 people die every year from heart disease which is the leading cause for heart attacks. At least 80% of these heart attacks happen at home. For me, it means I could save a life one person at a time by teaching them the life-saving ability to save a loved one.

I work as a licensed EMT-B for the state of Missouri and have worked 90% of my adult life in the medical field in some capacity. My education stems from military service to civilian employment.

About the lesson

Once the student agrees to a course, the student contacts me to schedule the course. The course is scheduled and on the date of the course, I can travel to or the student can travel to me for course completion. A certificate of completion is usually given to the student via email which can be used until completion card is received and emailed to the student.

There is not one set type of student I work with.  I truly believe this is a skill everyone should know.  My students range from 8-12 years old all the way to 70-80 years old.

When looking for an instructor, make sure he/she is credible. If there is any question, ask to see their credentials. Most instructors will not have a problem with that. There are multiple ways to find out if an instructor is listed with the American Heart Association. Go to the website and there is a link to find the instructor either by name of if possible finds their Instructor ID. Ask questions of that instructor such as; what training facility are you with? This will usually lead a way to investigate the instructor further.

The prices I quote are so the average non-medical person can afford. Whether it be for personal knowledge or a requirement for a job, it has to be affordable. The primary course is American Heart Association curriculum for both the Layman (Heartsaver) and for the Hospital Provider. I also offer other courses such as First Aid, Airway Management, Blood borne Pathogens, AED, and also for those preppers out there, some more advanced type training.
