About Deon

As a former Division 1 football and basketball player at Michigan State University, my passion for the sport and the development of it's athletes has led me to a career doing just that. With 6+ years as Director of Basketball Operations for 2 Division 1 Universities, the knowledge gained allows me to truly aid in the development of fundamentals as well as a true understanding of what being a student athlete entails.

During my tenure at the collegiate level, I've directed many youth basketball camps ranging from ages 5-18. There are many layers to the development of a player, and my experience with all ages allows me to approach each individual according to their skill level. Teaching in a fun and welcoming atmosphere is what it's all about.

(concealed information)

Teaching basketball isn't just about X's and O's. While teaching all of the little nuances that help develop athletes is fun, I also like to use my real life experiences to give a bigger picture of why. When you connect with someone and really give them your best, in return they do the same. It's very fulfilling to see someone open up, work hard on their craft, improve, and see the successes unfold right in front of them.

My desire for teaching came as a result of wanting to give back to a game that's given me so much. There's no better way to do that than help with the development of students that have a chance to experience some of the great things that basketball has allowed me.

Basketball has been a lifelong family business. Growing up with a father who played professional basketball in Europe and the NBA, basketball is in my dna. I worked for the 2004 World Champion Detroit Pistons, played collegiately at Michigan State University under Hall of Fame Head coach Tom Izzo, and worked as Director of Operations for two Universities while overseeing all of the youth basketball camps. I have multiple professional development series certifications from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) which provides innovative training toward the development of young athletes.

It's important to get to know the student. I'll share my past and experiences with the student, and learn about them as well.  I want to have an idea of what his/her short and longterm goals are, what their skillsets are, and why they want/need my help. Input from the parents are welcomed as well. From there, we will develop and execute a plan to make those goals a reality.

I've worked with kids both male and female ranging from 5-18 years old. The kids I've worked with have varying levels of skill and knowledge of the game. It's my job to gage their abilities and execute a plan to improve them.

Make sure you find someone who's just as passionate about teaching as your are of learning. It's important that you hire someone that you're comfortable with, have mutual respect for, and are willing to help you achieve your goals.  Make sure you do your due diligence in getting a feel for that person in the early stages to see if you're willing to invest your time and resources to.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are my goals?

What's my realistic opinions of my game?

What skillsets of mine need the most improvement?

What areas of my game am I most confident in?
