About
Begin your journey with bassoon, rediscover your passion for bassoon, or up your game as a bassoonist.
I earned a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in bassoon performance from The University of Georgia, a Master of Music (MM) in bassoon performance at Rice University, and a
Bachelor of Music (BM) degree at Indiana University. Additionally, I did post-graduate study with the legendary Bernard Garfield at Temple University.
A longtime bassoonist with the Augusta Symphony Orchestra, I also perform regularly with the Carroll Symphony Orchestra and freelance locally and regionally. I have performed on bassoon and contrabassoon in Canada, Mexico, Israel, South Korea, Lithuania, and Taiwan. I am also an adjunct bassoon instructor at Emory University and serve as a bassoon clinician at The Westminster Schools as well as other metro-Atlanta area schools.
Many of my high school students play with extracurricular music ensembles, including the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony. A significant number play in district honor bands and go on to make All State. One or more students have auditioned and been selected for The Governors Honors Program every year. Two have given performances on From the Top, a nationally syndicated radio show, and won the FTT Kent Cooke Scholarship Award. Many students have been awarded scholarships to premiere music schools. Adult students have found their niche playing for the love of it in chamber groups and/or in semi-professional ensembles in the area.
Whether you are beginning your journey with bassoon, rediscovering your passion for bassoon, or planning to up your game as a bassoonist, my desire is that you learn to play well and with a heart. I will help you develop personal strategies that build and
reinforce your musical skills. I will help you identify what will work to motivate yourself, practice self-discipline, and keep yourself accountable. Good outcomes flow from a commitment to excellence.
Whether you find yourself behind a screen, performing with an ensemble, or even beneath a spotlight that showcases what you bring to the music, others will listen. My hope is that you will grow to love making music on the bassoon along the way.
I look forward to meeting you and getting started.
