About Joel
I have played bassoon for almost all of my life. I have played professionally, I have a degree in bassoon performance from Boston University, and some of my teachers included Sherman Walt, Matthew Ruggiero, and Ralph Gomberg. I'm patient but insistent that students first of all get the fundamentals of the bassoon: breath support, embouchure, and correct hand positions. Second, I want them to make music and have fun.
I enjoy seeing students make progress on the bassoon, and I like it when they like a piece of classical music that I've assigned them.
I began teaching in junior high school, helping a beginning underclassman with his playing in the band.
I have a Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University in Bassoon Performance. I have worked with and learned from many fine bassoon teachers.

About the lesson

First of all, my students must be able to read music, and preferrably have experience playing another instrument. I can only waive these prerequisites if the student has a recommendation from a music teacher that the bassoon would be a good fit.
Second, I have to play and evaluate the student's instrument so I know what problems the student faces that are the result of a substandard bassoon or a bassoon that just in bad repair.
Third, I have to evaluate the student's reeds, or start beginners on my reeds that are taylored for beginners.
If the student is a beginner, I have a process for teaching the fundamentals at the student's pace and aptitude. If the student is more experienced, we talk about goals and what fundamentals need to be reviewed.
Most recently, I've only worked with beginning students, but would be happy to take on intermediate students too.
Look for someone you like working with who is fun, but insistent that you "get it right."

Details
Raters are $45/hour and $35 for a 45 minute lesson (recommended for beginners). Reeds are available to my students at $15/reed. A number of reeds are given free of charge to beginning students for the first few years.
