About Omar

My goal is to provide you with the practice and analytical tools to be able to learn the fundamentals of the instrument as well as approach any piece of music with the confidence and knowledge that you can do it by breaking things down and understanding concepts, phrases, etc at their core.

Bio:

Omar Macias has extensive experience performing both nationally and internationally in solo, chamber, orchestral, and crossover/hybrid roles in Classical, Jazz, Broadway, Country/Americana, Electronic, and many other genres and styles and has shared the stage with names such as Itzhak Perlman, Marvin Hamlisch, Arlo Guthrie, Jeff Beal, John Daversa, Shelley Berg, Jorge Mejia, and many others. As a symphonic cellist, Omar has appeared with the Symphony of the Americas, Cuban American Youth Orchestra, Alhambra Orchestra, Miami Lyric Opera, the Sunrise Pops Symphony, and is acurrent substitute cellist for the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra.

As a lifelong lover of all types of music, Omar brings his passion and enthusiasm for music and the cello to every lesson and student he teaches. Whether discussing fundamentals or abstract musical concepts, simple tunes or complex repertoire, Omar dives in headfirst with his students to break things down and fully understand the technical and musical components behind a piece of music, how to navigate it physically, and how to approach and break down practice.

Omar received his Bachelor's Degree in Cello Performance from Saint Olaf College in Northfield, MN where he studied with Dr. David Carter, a student of Janos Starker and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi; his Masters in Music Performance and Artist Diploma from the University of Miami - Frost School of Music, studying with Ross Harbaugh, a student of Janos Starker and Andre Navarra; and his DMA from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, studying and serving as Teaching Assistant to Tanya Remenikova, former student and teaching assistant to the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich.

I think it is difficult to be a musician and not have to teach at some point along your studies!

My first chance to teach was during my undergrad when I took over a few students for a colleague of mine while they studied abroad for a semester. It was such a rewarding experience that challenged the way I thought about and approached the instrument as well as many fundamentals that I had not given thought to in years because they had become so engrained. Over time I saw how much teaching not only helped me help others, but also helped me with my own playing.

About the lesson

I first aim to get an understanding of the individual's background (if any) with music as well as hear about what sparked the interest in learning the cello and what goals they may have for themselves with the instrument/music. Once I have an understanding on where they see themselves, I then make a plan with them for how we will get there.

For younger students, I work with parents to understand what goals they have for lessons with their kids - helping with school/orchestra assignments, preparing for a performance or audition, or just taking lessons out interest and enjoyment from their kid(s).

Above all, I place trust and communication at the top of my priorities when working with anyone!

I got my start by working with young beginners in third-sixth grade, but have since had the chance to teach middle and high schoolers, adults, and recently college students as adjunct cello professor at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University in Collegeville, MN.

If you are looking for a teacher that you mesh well with, don't be afraid to take several lessons with different teachers if it is an available option to you!

Often times teachers will offer a trial lesson to see how the fit is, and this is a great opportunity for both teacher and student to get a feel for each other.

Be clear with your teacher about your goals and expectations, but also be flexible and open minded in case they suggest something different. In music, there are many different ways to arrive at the same destination, so one teacher may not say the same as another, and that is ok!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
There are no stupid questions in the music learning journey!

I encourage all my students to ask anything they are curious about or may not be sure of. Interest and curiosity are the combustion that keep the learning train moving, so I say ask away!
