About Charles

I have taught courses and designed curriculums at the collegiate level at North Carolina State University and worked with students of all backgrounds, skill levels, and ages. I hold a PhD in biochemistry and have recently moved back to the North Carolina area. My goal it to play a role in improving my community's STEM proficiency by helping students understand and really enjoy scientific concepts. I specialize in biology and chemistry as well as subtopics within those two disciplines - genetics, cell biology, ecology etc...

I got started teaching after excelling in my early college courses. I applied to serve as a teaching assistant for a biochemistry course and from here I was responsible for curriculum design, leading recitation sections (small groups that meet outside of the large lecture for more one-on-one study), exam question selection and grading. From here I went on to graduate school where I led biochemistry and molecular biology lab courses and tutored students in biology at the University of Texas.

I received a 5 on the Chemistry and Biology AP exams as a high school student. I also received a BS in biology from NC State and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Texas. I have served as a teaching assistant for advanced biology courses and led problem sessions for groups of 20-30 college students. I have proctored exams in various science courses and provided tutoring and office hours to students for a total of 5 years of.

About the lesson

I begin by setting up the first meeting, preferably with a parent present, to establish a baseline for where the student's strengths and growth areas are. In addition, this meeting provides the chance to discuss what the goals are and allow the student to take ownsership in their own success.

I have worked with high school, college and graduate students ranging in ages from 16-30 years of age. Their backgrounds range widely from first time ever opening a biology textbook, to nurses going back to school to study biochemistry.

I would say that the best advice I can give is, do not underestimate the advantage you can gain by seeking outside assistance with your classes. While it may seem intimidating, or difficult, to dedicate more time than the regular school day to your studies, this type of commitment will not only help you bring your grades up in certain classes it will also teach you valuable time management skills that will help you in college and into your professional career!

Details

At this time, I do not have a standard pricing system. My plan is to establish the needs on an individual student basis and use a template to design a pricing structure for each. Starting rates will be $25/hour of homework/assignment assistance and $30/hour for exam prep and review.
