Does anyone need help?

My name is Duane and I am currently a PhD student in biological engineering at ASU and I am looking to take on a few new students at the high school and college levels in order to earn a little extra money. I have worked in the laboratory sciences for 10+ years and have industry experience as well (humanitarian aid, wastewater treatment, potable water recovery, agriculture, waste recycling, etc.).

I work part-time as a private tutor and executive functioning skills coach, and have been doing so for 5+ years.

I have worked previously at OnTrack Tutoring (Non-competes have expired) and worked with neurotypical and neurodivergent students.

My tutoring style is 1-on-1 and if the student is in High School, then a parent must be present at all times during sessions. Considering the pandemic, I am primarily working virtually at the moment and can work with students via Google Teams/Hangouts, Zoom, and Skype - however, in-person is possible with safety precautions. My style focuses on helping the student develop their own skills in order to be successful. My goal is to make myself obsolete - I want to work with the student until they have learned to be successful on their own.

I have experience working with people who are ADHD (all 3 types), autism spectrum, & other developmental delays.

I am vaccinated, practice social distancing, wear masks, & sanitize everything.

I enjoy helping students like myself find success in methods and protocols that work for them. I am a PhD student with ADHD & Autism and I use my experiences as I am helping students determine learning methods that work for them and take their ADHD/Autism into account. This involves executive function techniques & practice, along with planning, follow-up, and plan-editing. My techniques are interdisciplinary and pull from a multitude of teaching styles to better help students learn concepts and applications. Right before COVID hit I was able to help bring a student from a failing grade to an high-passing grade, which allowed him to get into his university of choice. I still keep in touchwith this student and he still utilizes what I worked with him on in order to be successful in college.

I began teaching in a microbiology laboratory, managing & monitoring approximately 20 students, in 2012. I worked with students on conceptual understanding, applied mathematics, applied techniques, and safety. Students learned the basics about microorganisms. From that point, I worked in teaching and private tutoring on the side and as a part of my graduate degree progress. I have taken a multitude of courses in scientific education and mathe education, specifically geared towards applications in order to foster understanding. I have mentored undergraduates and graduates in my laboratory and continue to do so.

About the lesson

My work with students is built about rendering my role obsolete - if I am doing my job right, then I should not be needed by the end of the semester. Please note, that all students are different and "by the end of the semester" is not a guarantee, some students may require more or less help. I work with individuals on a multitude of levels to develop & implement good study skills. We set goals & discusss how to best teach them & keep them on track.

My rates are dependent on the materials being taught, but are as follows:
$20-$25 per hour for high school-level academics
$30-$40 per hour for college-level academics
$40+ for Executive Functioning Skills & Neurodivergence Self-Management
