About Emma

My service is to students of all ages, and I work especially well with homeschooled students. I prepare students for standardized tests with helpful strategies and motivate them to take control over their grades in a way that works for them. Especially concerning the sciences, I believe self-confidence is the stepping stool to a good academic performance, and my mission is to make life sciences less intimidating to everyone.

As a senior in college with a background in biochemistry and multiple lab experiences, I bring a practical, grounding aspect to studying science. I believe working with the processes on a tangible level improves understanding, and I want to bring that experience to students who may have not yet had that opportunity. I have tutored students privately before, but I wanted to bring my services to a wider platform like this website.

I love being able to give the support and encouragement to students that I recieved. I know how it feels to be intimidated by STEM subjects and the frustration of going through a problem repeatedly without fully grasping the concept. My goal is to give students the specialized help they need and work patiently to achieve a real understanding of their subject. Life sciences can be difficult, blending math and physics concepts with facts that can only be known with rote memorization. I want to bring not only the things I've learned, but the things I've struggled with to students and offer real, practical guidance while giving encouragement that stems from empathy.

I've privately tutored both homeschooled and private/public schooled students, so am aware of the unique challenges of each. I have also tutored at a volunteer center for refugee children in Lynn, MA. I specialize in homeschooled tutoring because I grew up homeschooled myself. I am finishing my undergraduate degree in biochemistry and have worked in genetics and protein laboratories, but am also a TA for one of the freshman biology courses and have served as a mentor to incoming students.

About the lesson

Usually I try to get to know them a bit first and see what their learning style is like. I ask for some specific lessons or subjects that they're struggling with and I ask them what their comprehension level is already. Then we break down the topic step by step in as many different ways as possible so the student has a solid foundation, before moving onto the next step.
