About Kyle

To define "service" is to understand the basic attitude of a teacher or mentor. In my mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, entrepreneurs, founders of tech startups, this service mentality is the fundamental --- take genuine interests in students' aspirations, challenges, and leanring styles. Equipped with this understanding, I build long term respectful relationship with my mentees.

Enabling others to unleash their maximum potential. Am an active mentor of founders and CEOs of startups. To teach students of language, the basic approach makes no difference from cultivating the best and most creative busienss leaders. I know how to inspire, motivate, guide and empower students to become the best they can and want to be.

I started teaching mandarin Chinese to foreign students in Beijing Language Institute when I was also a student there learning English and French. Later I taught Chinese to non-Chinese speaking journalists. BTW, my mother has been a Mandarin Chinese teacher throughout her life.

A native Chinese speaker, I earned a BA in intellectual history from Yale, MBA from University of Chicago. Mentored (still mentoring) founders of tech startups, junior entrepreneurs. Taught spoken and written Chinese (Mandarin) to English speakers (both adults and youths). A paid translator in literary works, business, insurance and legal documents. Built and managed multicultural teams throughout career. Negotiated with cross border clients, government officials and JV partners in both English and Chinese.

About the lesson

First understand student's objectives, purpose, and concerns in learning. Then reviewe his/her current level of skills and what course materials have been used in the past for learning. Together we customize a learning program to cater his/her individual needs.

Adults and youths.

Personality fit comes first before any skill related matters. Then evaluate if the teacher genuinely cares about helping students maximize their learning potential.

Launched a virtual learning program participated by over 350 Yale alumni in 61 countries. In this program, I led 17 directors in 6 committees through a large matching model I built to enable our alumni to meet virtually (due to Covid) across 21 time zones.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Assess their true motive and interests in learning Chinese and present their own learning style (not just languages) and then partner with teacher to capitalize on that style.
