About Annalisa

Miss Ewald began her classical guitar studies in her native Washington, D.C., as a protogée of Sophocles Papas, colleague and friend of the legendary Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia, who invited her to study with him after hearing her play. "I am grooming you for the concert stage." Papas told the astounded pre-teen. She made her debut at age 13 at the Washington Guitar Society. Her further training includes studies in classics at St. John’s College, Annapolis; the San Francisco Conservatory of Music; a B.A. in classical guitar performance from Bard College; post-graduate work in the Suzuki Method at the Hartt School of Music and the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin College. Ms. Ewald has concertized since her San Francisco days and has appeared in numerous festivals: the Boston Early Music Festival, Santa Barbara Bach Festival, Laurel Festival, and Manitou Festival. She has also been awarded grants for concert series by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Corporate clients include the USTA Open, the Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament, Fidelity Investments, the Boston Early Music Festival and Philips Corp. Frequently a soloist and ensemble player in the New York metropolitan area, she also teaches in her roving SoNo Guitar Studio, named for its roots in the arts district of the same name. She is now in her fifth season with The New York Continuo Collective, a large ensemble (of 30) specializing in baroque performance practice and performed with them this summer at the Boston Early Music Festival debutis season on theorbo in"Vanitas Vanitatum: Music of 17th Century Rome". ANd her solo album charted in the Billboard Top Ten (classical chart.)

In my twentities when I was studying at San Francisco Conservatory o fMusic, I began taking on a few beginning students.

I have been playing all my life, and in addition to numerous great teachers on classical guitar I earned a B.A. in Classical Guitar Performance from Bard College, then undertook post graduate studies with a Juiliiard department head in theory and historical performance practice.

My debut solo album garnered No. 8 ion the Billboard Classical chart, and it got rave reviews from critics.

About the lesson

We meet and I assess their way of stting and holding the instrument, then watch them play whatever they know, then begin working at their level on skills and rejpertoire.

I also ask what their musical interests, influences and goals are in order to create a program specifc just to them.

All kinds, ages and levels.

Make sure the teacher listencs to what you say as much as what you play.

Not recent: the original Woodstock.

Other than that, an early music performance a few months back by Charles Weaver, lute, and Elizabeth Baber, soprano, performing 17th centruy music.
