About Matthew
I run my classes by first going over the conceptual foundations behind computer science and filling any knowledge gaps. Aside from teaching the basics, I am a strong believer that no two students take the same path. I like to help the student create a project they have in mind. While there is freedom in their project choice, I like to steer them toward certain features that will focus on various skills needed for more advanced projects and future learning. This freedom is what keeps students interested and helps avoid burnout. I have a library of projects built from previous students and my own projects, so in the absence of ideas, there is plenty of inspiration to pull from.
My favorite part of tutoring in computer science is that it is such a powerful tool. When it is mastered, you are given the ability to create with little restrictions other than your imagination. Bringing a student from little to no experience to being able to create projects they find useful or fun is very rewarding.
I got my first job as a STEM tutor at Sylvan Learning Centers when I first turned 16 and have tutored ever since!
I am currently working on a master's in computer science. I have been tutoring in STEM for over 8 years and have worked in the field as a software engineer doing web development when not in school. Additionally, I have an A.A. in natural sciences and mathematics and an A.A. in liberal studies - teacher education. These A.A. qualify to help with Biology and English.

In the case of learning outside the scope of schoolwork, I run my classes by first going over the conceptual foundations behind the subject and getting an idea of any gaps in knowledge. With this initial assessment done, a personalized plan tailored to weaker areas can be made!
I have worked with a wide variety of students ranging from kindergarten through college and beyond. Whether they have no experience or have coded before, I customize my approach to identify their weaknesses and build projects that fill their knowledge gaps. I typically tutor Python, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, Scratch, GitHub, and the command line. Recently, I have added math up to Calculus and Linear Algebra, college-level biology courses, and English.
