About Yoshito

I am founding artistic director of Abarukas and an award-winning choreographer. My work was seen in Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, Israel, Mexico and the U.S. I've won the International Choreographic Competition at NW Dance Project and Choreographic Shindig at Whim W'him in the U.S. I was awarded for Best Choreography Award in Italy by FINI Dance. I've been commissioned to create a work from Peridance Contemporary Dance Company, Alvin Ailey/Fordham BFA Program, Jamaica Performing Arts Center, FINI Dance, UNCSA etc. I've won Audience Prize at Masdanza International Contemporary Dance Festival in Spain. I've presented his work for International Solo Tanz Theater Festival in Germany, Gdansk Dance Festival in Poland, Masdanza International Contemporary Dance Festival in Spain, Mash International Choreography Competition in Israel, and FINI Dance Festival in Italy, FIDCDMX in Mexico. I've appeared in the televisions and my work has been featured in NY1 as well as Bric TV in Spectrum Cable Channel.

I founded Abarukas in the fall of 2012, and the Company performed at BAM Fisher, Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Series in 2014 and 2016, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, LaMama, APAP Showcase at Peridance, Baruch Performing Arts Center, 92Y, and a number of universities in the U.S as well as a residency and performance at Kaatsbaan International Dance Center. The company was invited to the Masdanza Extensions Tour in 2018 to perform in the seven islands of the Canarian Archipielage in Spain. Broadway Dance World describes, “I witnessed a true work of art...Mr. Sakuraba's brilliant mind for choreography has captivated me... extreme creativity, fine detail, and high level dancing."

A most favorite part of my job is to meet new dancers and create something beyond expectations. I enjoy watching new dancers to grow as a performing artist through a fulfiling process and bring the best out of their talents and skills.

I started dancing first, choreographing next, then teaching.

I graduated from Manhattanville College with B.A in Dance/Theater in NY and completed Professional Training Program from Martha Graham School in NYC. I worked with established dance schools (Graham, Ailey, Peridance, etc), universities (UNCSA, Sam Houston, etc), companies (NW Dance Project, Whim W'him, etc). I currently teach at a number of schools in NYC.

About the lesson

I have eagle eyes for a new student's strength/talent. Once I find their strengh, I find a way to maximize the strength. For instance, I have been asked to choreograph for a senior student at Alvin Ailey/Fordham University and created a solo using his talent.

I have worked with students of beg/intermediate level, advance level, professional level and teens (under 16), and international students (I have taught workshop in Italy).

I'd advise a student to choose a teacher based on their experience and reputation. Find out someone who has worked with a teacher you're curious about and ask them about the teacher.

I recently won the Audience Prize at Masdanza International Contemporary Dance Festival in Spain.
