About Kim
Hello, I'm Kim. I've been writing since I learned how to spell. I began tutoring 3rd graders when I was in 5th grade and have done so throughout my life, formally and informally. In addition to tutoring, I had a rich and satisfying career as a public benefit arts professional, specializing in grant writing and communications. Then I pivoted to creativity research in teaching and learning in classrooms throughout the US and abroad. I received my Master's in Creativity Studies from SUNY Buffalo and infuse my tutoring with a creative thinking skills mindset. This approach helps learners recognize their innate abilities to work through problems or obstacles to learning and turn any situation into a learning situation. I look forward to working with people of all ages, particularly youth.
My first tutoring job was in 5th grade, when I tutored third graders in vocabulary. When I moved to Los Angeles in 2001, I began tutoring for LAUSD in two schools in Studio City. In my professional work as a grant writer, I worked closely with many grant writers as an editor, resulting in many successful proposals for Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Get Lit - Words Ignite, California State Summer School Foundation, Centers for Research on Creativity, Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum, among others. I love working with people who love to write and communicate with words.
I now teach and/or facilitate learning for people of all ages through my company Catalyst Muse. Two of the classes are writing specific: JournalShare and StoryTalk, both for adults, 18+.
I consider writing as my craft and have read and studied formally and informally throughout my life. Formally, I've studied creative writing, essay writing, and character development at UCLA Extension Writing Program and taken multiple writing workshops with poets, fiction writers, and performance artists.
I've published essays and photographs in regional and local publications. I made my living for 25 years as a grant writer and development specialist in arts and culture organizations, including Get Lit - Words Ignite and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. I then pivoted to creativity research with the Centers for Research on Creativity in Los Angeles, where in addition to contributing to research design and field work, I cowrote and edited all reports for clients such as Inner City Arts, PS Arts, Educational Theatre Association, Louisiana A+ Schools, Alameda County Office of Education, and many more.
As a volunteer, I cofounded Topanga Authors' Group and the TRANSPORT Topanga Literary Festival.

My process starts with a conversation with the student and parents, as appropriate. I ask students about their relationship to writing. What causes frustration? What do they like most about it? In what ways do they use writing? What do they hope to accomplish in the tutoring process?
Based on what I hear, I ask specific follow up questions to better understand how I can best help the student meet their goal.
I ask for two writing samples and will ask follow up questions based on what I learn.
I work with the student on creating an intention for our work together in which we agree on the problem, goal, or issue they wish to address through the tutoring process.
I suggest a course of action that must be agreed upon, before starting.
I suggest a timeline for our working together based on either a deadline or what I consider to be a reasonable time period to accomplish the goal.
Each session includes a brief warm up exercise, the body of the lesson, and a reflection. Homework might be given, but not always and in reasonable amounts.
- youth (2nd - 5th grade)
- high school & college students
- adult writers (poets and essay writers)
- public benefit professionals (non-profit organizations)
- academics and scholars
Think about instead of diving in head first, taking a session or two to orient to the process of learning together. Think about what you're good at, what you love or don't love about writing and communication. Think about what you'd like to accomplish and set at least one goal that excites you in the pit of your stomach, or, at the very least, makes you a bit uncomfortable.
The family campout in Harper's Ferry, WV - a historic site on the Susquehanna River, where 40+ family members spent the Halloween weekend, participating in the campgrounds Halloween parade and haunted house and getting reacquainted with my 16 nieces and nephews and 5 great nieces and nephews amidst the changing leaves and natural beauty of the area.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is it that I need help with specifically? Is it spelling? grammar? How to frame my thoughts before I sit down to write?
What do I find the most challenging about writing?
What comes to me easy or naturally?
In what ways do I read now (ex. device, tablet, book, computer)
What kind of material do I like to read?
Do I have the time and will I commit to do the work with a tutor?
