About Susan

There's simply nothing more satisfying to me than creating art, working with images, drawing and painting mostly.

For some reason I love painting buildings and other structures found in familiar towns and cities in a way that creates a townscape that represents my personal perception and highlights historic and artistic landmarks. Several of my townscape images have been reproduced as jigsaw puzzles sold by Heritage Puzzles, based in North Carolina.

I teach in the way the I was taught that was most enjoyable for me, but I am also willing to help students wiht any project they have in mind, based on my capability.

When I was teaching 5-year-olds how they could copy a Monet Painting, using tempera paint, I got a thrill out seeing them realize that they were capable of more than just drawing stick figures. Their parents were in awe of the results.

I like showing others than anyone is capable of creating art.

I actually started by teaching my son, and he won an art contest when he was about five years old. Not long after that I worked as a teacher assistant with Kinder students, and I was amazed at their ability to copy a Monet, with just a minimal amount of guidance.

Since then, I've mainly focused on my own paintings and reproductions of townscapes as prints, cards and jigsaw puzzles, but occasionally I give tips to my cousin who began painting as a senior. She sends me photos ofher paintings in progress, and I critique and make recommendations on how to improve them.

I was trained in drawing as a Commercial Art student at Guilford Technical Community College.  I also studied Commercial Art under Harry Blair at Page High in Greensboro. I took several painting and other art classes at other colleges and Universities I attended - Appalachian State, Rockingham Community College and UNC-Greensboro.

For my folk art townscape painting, I won several awards at Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Shows while living on the NC Outer Banks.

After returning to live in Greensboro, where I grew up, I was commissioned to do a painting of Greensboro for the new Women's wing of Cone Memorial Hospital.

I like to start with helping them reproduce a drawing of a photo using a grid, then next using that method to help them draw from a still life.

There is also a method related to drawing with the right side of the brain, where the student draws from a photo or picture turned upside down.  These help the student focus on observation, which is essential to drawing.

As noted above - very young and older. Most have had no other prior instruction.

Understand that creating art is something you never finish learning about.  The important thing is not to be afraid to start or to try something totally new.

I really enjoyed working recently on the Townscape of the city I grew up in.  I was able to include of lot of personal memories in this work that was commissioned for a new wing of the local hospital.
